Advertising, Is it worth it?

I own some online video games and I was wondering if there would be a good ROI for advertising. My games are donation based and so people can choose whether or not they want to pay for the extra benefits.

I would like to see more attention and more users, but not really seeing a good way of promoting myself without dropping a few grand. So I was wondering if someone could give some ideas on how and what is good for advertising.

I don't mind spending money on advertising, I just wanna get my moneys worth.

I don't know much about your website, but from the brief description you give above, I wouldn't go with in the paid advertising route.

Here's an idea... Do Youtube advertising. It sounds like it would work well for your type of business. When new hot video games are about to come out, do a video review or info video of them and upload them to Youtube. And put your site's url somewhere in the video or whatever gets the word out...

If you still want to do paid advertising, I suggest you test it by starting small. Maybe throw in around $500 here and there and see how it works out.

Advertising will definitely benefit you. Specially if its on google adwords, highly targeted traffic at a decent price. Try social media advertising like on facebook. Have a fan page , people there, are crazy about gaming and would definitely pay for playing. Target the free social marketing by making as many friends as you can specially who play social games on facebook.

Instead of spending directly on advertising, you can also create your brand by paying the WSO experts on warriorforum, charges are less here.

Spending less than a grand can and will list your site on the top of google results, thereby getting you free traffic, just by utilizing the search engine optimization services of fellow warriors. e.g. Mattlaclear (a fellow warrior) has a $99 service that takes your website on the first page of google and also a maintenance service to keep you there. Type 'mattlaclear' in the search box and you will find his services. I am not trying to advertise his services, it's just for informational purposes.

There are many other warriors who can help you in this. Just go to the WSO forum.

As suggested by Dash Evra, Youtube advertising sounds like a good option for you, if you are not very enthusiastic about spending a lot of money on advertising. Apart from Youtube, Facebook ad campaigns are also effective, although you need to target your audience very precisely. A mixture of these both will get your advertising campaign started and soon you should be able to see results

You need a tangible return to make some forms of advertising worthwhile, a marketer might pay $0.50 each for 200 PPC ad clicks in order to get one sale, so he has to clear $100 just to break even.
The leas expensive ads might be CPV pop over/under ads that you target specific sites like gamer sites, costs can be under 10 cents per thousand views.
Making your game a facebook application, like farmville might be one way to get free traffic.

Testing will provide you with the answer. Why not just chuck $100 at it and see? If you make >$100 back, then you haven't lost anything and you will have some stats upon which to base your future decisions.

Yes, if you start small with very targeted ads, then determine if the ROI is worth continuing with. However, for a donation-based game, i do not know how profitable it will be. So you may need to tweak your revenue model

The problem about Advertising is knowing what will work for YOUR Product.

One type of advertising might work great for me and suck for you.

How much profit you make per sale will also determine the type advertising you can do.

I like the idea of YOUTUBE advertising if you are on a limited budget.

I have to go with Tom - you would really need to test it to figure out which route is better for you.

Cheap advertising is the way to go. It is pretty easy to get some good media buying deals that will give you some pretty good ROI.

Adevrtising can be not only cheap, but fully free. Just try to look for some relevant blogs and articles.

Do you already have traffic and players to your site?

If yes, try to turn your current users into your advertising platform. Get one of the "Tell A Friend" Scripts and have the current users get some kind of upgrade if they refer 10 friends. Give them something if they post something on their FaceBook page.

Since it's video games how about running a tournament or contest for the highest score and give something away.

Yes, I understand the youtube advertising and the social networking part. I have ran contests to get people to even just post the link in places so that I can get some traffic. I have gained about 500 users a month, and out of those, i keep about 20 per 100 that stick around. And out of those, I get about 2 that pay money to play. I would like to get to the point where people genuinely like what I have to offer and help with the promoting.

I have realized that maybe I should drop a little bit of cash to see what works, but from what I have read here, just do some google adwords? I have added my game to voting pages, tried writing blogs about it. I know it wont come right away, but patience is probably a virtue at this point.

Thanks for all the input guys, you guys are always great.

I would avoid paying for advertising if you can just do it yourself. Doing it yourself will be safer.

      Really, now? Terrible advice.

      Listen duality,

Advertising is definitely worth it. Why? Because if you're selling anything, it's a business. . . and successful business needs 3 things

      Product - Attention/Traffic - Sales

You have a product, now it's time to expand your methods of getting traffic. Once the eyes are on your product, make sure you have your sale. Graphics and copy (not necessarily direct response as I'm sure that will be assumed) will help get you the sales you're looking for. SEO SEO SEO for the traffic. The more eyes on your product, the more those conversion rates are going to mean something

The reason why I said the above was terrible advise was because if you don't know how to do these things, they won't work. If they do, you're lucky, but it won't be likely that they work well.

If you DO hire someone to do this, be wary, there are a lot of rookies that are good at disguising themselves as professionals (but if they're so good that you can't tell the diff, maybe they have just the ability you are looking for to draw in clients).

You're safe bet is going pro. If you want to try it yourself, go ahead, there's no harm in doing so. Just be prepared for the consequences and learn from them

      Edit: Hope that helps! =)

Try promoting it through facebook. These kind of campaigns do well there.

The OP did not give any details about how much he is earning per user, if any. How is it that all of you can offer advice like, "Ya it's worth it?" You know nothing about his business, yet you are offering financial advice to him. OK, smarties, what will his ROI be if he follows your advice?

You're right Brian. I didn't say if I was making any or how much. Ill throw a number out there right now. I average about 4k a month on my games. Gettin ready to launch another one on sunday. Thinking of different ways to go about blasting the name out there.

So in reality, what would be a good investment and some good avenues for advertising this?

I'd definitely start with free advertising opportunities thinking outside the box. For example, I'd go to online gaming forums and participating and promoting your games to users. If your game is similar to, lets say Halo, then you would go into Halo forums and promote your games to the target audience. Creating a facebook page for your games and spreading the word about your game to people who play similar games.

Thank you Eric. Very good information. I have tried some of it myself. And I have scored 5k+ users doing some simple methods. I would like to get another 10k, but the right way. The more users I have, the more it looks like people wanna play and pay. So numbers are a big thing.

If you can, duality, shoot me a PM. I can't send them quite yet (I need 50 posts) but I will likely be able to by the time the week is out.

I'm interested in your games, your approach and a little bit more detail about what you've done and what you plan to do.

If I can't help you out, I might just end up playing one of your games, LOL. They look fun.
