Well, it looks like you can reach people pretty much anywhere in the world now.

The article is about 7 months old.. but still:

Mount Everest "Wired": 3g Mobile Service Available for Trekkers & Sherpas

People on the summit of Everest can surf the internet, but my calls get dropped all the time... ha.
