Hi Warriors,

I'm new to Joomla, but I have installed it on a domain and everything went smoothly.

I installed a template and it was still fine.

I uploaded 5 articles...no problems.

Then I went to upload the 6th article and suddenly I get Internal Server Error.

Here's the message I get:

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@weddingplansforyou.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Can anyone help????

Thanks,

Scott

    Hi BlueSquares,

    Yes, the rest of the site works great. It only does this when I click on "Save" or "Apply" to add a new article. I have tried multiple different articles since then as well.

    I can preview the articles, but cannot post/save them.

    Thanks,

    Scott

    Have you checked the server error log? This error doesn't tell us much.

      Yes, I just checked them...they don't show anything for the cause of the issue, just for the original error I was getting saying a 500 Error Page and a 404 Error Page were not found.

      In fact, they don't show anything since 16:54 but I have tried multiple times to add articles since that time including about 5 minutes ago. That's what makes this issue so frustrating.

      Here are the error logs for the last 300 errors (this site was just started today)...

    I have since figured out it has to do with Article Length.

    I can post a few lines and it works fine, but when I post more than just a few lines, it gives me the error.

    Someone suggested having mod_security turned off, as it has been rumored to cause problems like this on the Joomla Forum so I'm waiting to have it disabled and test to see if it resolves the issue.

    Thanks everyone for the help. I'll keep you posted on my result with mod_security.

      I was going to suggest you dump Joomla. Can you tell I'm not a fan?

      Anyway, glad you figured it out.

    Just a quick update on what I found to be happening and what I had to do to resolve this issue.

    It appears that Joomla 1.5 causes some kind of overload after a number of articles are posted. This causes it to only allow a small number of lines in each new article to be posted and saved. I mean like 5 lines or so.

    At least this is what I have found to be the case and I have also found others with the same issue.

    From what I understand, it may be the way Joomla is working with certain servers/hosting providers and either the MySQL Data or something in the PHP.

    I tried removing mod_security, as this was suggested, but it did not resolve the problem.

    To actually resolve the issue, I had to uninstall Joomla 1.5 and install the older version 1.0 and then re-post all the articles.

    Hope no one else has to go through all this if they use Joomla 1.5 but if so, that's the only resolution I could find for now.

    Thanks for all the help on this issue.

      I'm resurrecting this ancient thread. I allowed someone to talk me into joomla and all of its supposedly great features...but it is not too user friendly at all. I'm trying to go through the simple operation of replacing one subscription script with another (the one from my autoresponder service)--which I've always been able to do on previous domains.

      But not with Joomla. The guys at the joomla tech forums have all appeared to gone on a Caribbean vacation together. So I'm stuck.

        Ah, so the problem is not joomla, the problem is you don't know how to use it. LOL. Why does everyone want to blame the platform they use when they can't figure something out?

        I don't know what script you're using, what autorespond service you're using, where you are hosting it, what version of php and mySQL you're using. Without knowing this information, I can't help you. Joomla, is very user friendly, you just have to use some common sense. IF your issue is customizing code, then it isn't Joomla, it is your lack of knowledge of php, javascript, or css. Thats all.

        Whatever module, component, or plug in you're using, can't be that hard. You go to extension manager, install, and there you go. You may have to find the component, or module/plugin and click "enable". It is pretty easy and user friendly, honestly. I have a feeling it is a problem with the php or mysql version and you should ask your host to update it.

        What version of joomla are you using?

          I'm using 1.5. Other people on the joomla help site appeared to have asked similar questions after a day long search for a simple file. No one has answered them. So I decided to come bitch about it here in the hopes I can get some help.

    Are you talking about a newsletter subscription or an actual membership account subscription?

    If it is a newsletter subscription, the code is probably in a custom HTML module. Go to Extensions => Module and look through to see which module has your newsletter code.

    If it is a membership script that is integrated with your native Joomla accounts, that is a little trickier. Most of the membership components take some editing of the core files.

    ETA: As for the original issue on this thread, I've used the platform since before it forked from Mambo. I have sites with thousands of articles and I've never had an issue with not being able to save new articles regardless of length.

    My guess is that the OP's problem either had to do with a funky install or funky hosting.

      thanks for your response. I've looked EVERYWHERE for the script. Every freakin' module starting with the most obvious--and I can't find it. Even looked at page source on my browser to get an idea. The thing is hidden.

      It must be in the core files then. So how would I get to those? Once I get in there I can paste the desired script in. I know what to do...it's a matter of location. I'm sure the joomla forum folks could answer this question in a second.

    Suzanne,

    Is there a title above the existing signup? If so, that is usually the title of the module.

    There are two ways you can find it more easily. Either filter your modules by location (what spot they are in on your site: left, right, user1, etc.) or by type. Most likely the current one is in a module like the standard core custom HTML module or maybe something like Geshi, which includes a file.

    It would be a little odd for them to put it in the template files, but I've seen stranger things.

    To look at the template files, go to templates/your_template_name and almost everything should be in index.php.

    I have seen some commercial themes where they override the standard Joomla functions. If that's the case, you're just going to have to dig in the template files to figure out what is happening. But that wouldn't normally be the case.

    Look in the template index.php file, anywhere you see this:

    Code:
    <jdoc:include type="modules" name="module-name-here" />
    That is a spot where you can display a module. I would make a note of all the locations so it's easier for you to track down where something is in the future.

      ok thanks so much for helping me. Hopefully I'm not being too much of a burden here. I MIGHT have found it...but the script wording in the page source view is different than what I've found in the file. So I'm reluctant to make a change that can screw up my whole format. These two scripts look different to me.

      I'll copy just the first part of each so it doesn't burn your eyeballs out.

      This is what is in the page source view:

      <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
      function mod_checkPublic() {
      var mod_user_mail = document.getElementById('mod_user_mail');
      if (!isMail(mod_user_mail.value)) {
      alert( "Insert a valid mail address" );
      mod_user_mail.focus();
      return false;
      }
      var mod_user_name = document.getElementById('mod_user_name');
      if (isEmpty(mod_user_name.value)) {
      alert( "Insert your name" );
      mod_user_name.focus();
      return false;
      }
      return true;
      }

      function mod_checkPrivate() {
      return true;
      }

      function mod_checkAttributes() {
      return true;
      }

      function mod_checkForm() {
      if (mod_checkAttributes()) {

      return mod_checkPublic(); }
      return false;
      }
      </script>

      This is what is the module file:

      <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
      function mod_checkPublic() {
      var mod_user_mail = document.getElementById('mod_user_mail');
      if (!isMail(mod_user_mail.value)) {
      alert( "<?php echo JText::_('ERROR_ERR039'); ?>" );
      mod_user_mail.focus();
      return false;
      }
      var mod_user_name = document.getElementById('mod_user_name');
      if (isEmpty(mod_user_name.value)) {
      alert( "<?php echo JText::_('ERROR_ERR038'); ?>" );
      mod_user_name.focus();
      return false;
      }
      return true;

      function mod_checkPrivate() {
      return true;
      }

      function mod_checkAttributes() {
      <?php
      $attrs = $newsletter->get('attributes');
      $attrs_array = $attrs->toArray();
      foreach ($attrs_array as $attr_name => $attr_value) {
      if ($attr = $ninstance->loadAttribute($attr_name)) {
      echo 'var ' . $attr_name . '_field = document.getElementById(\'mod_' . $attr_name . '\');';
      if ($attr_value == ATTRIBUTE_MANDATORY) {
      echo 'if(isEmpty(' . $attr_name . '_field.value)) {';
      echo 'alert("' . JText::_($attr->get('name_i18n')) . ' is a mandatory argument");';
      echo '' . $attr_name . '_field.focus();';
      echo 'return false;';
      echo '}';
      }
      if ($attr->get('type') == ATTRIBUTE_TYPE_INTEGER) {

        here is another part of the puzzle. Someone created the script for me independently. It wasn't part of the joomla blog as far as I know because I wanted it for a very specific purpose.

        This person is not available...but I wonder if it's possible that he hid the file in some unknown place (????)

    Hi Suzanne,

    That's what you're looking for. What you are seeing in the module is all the logic. What you see on the page is the end result.

    To double check, you can create add a new module to that same spot (right, left, etc). Use the same *type* of module, I'm assuming the person used the custom html module.

    Paste your new code in it.

    Publish the new module and unpublish the old one. Then if you need to, you can always go back to the old one.

      thanks so much. I will send my page to Nameless and if I'm still confused, I will try this next. At least I reached a new level in understanding Joomla today...lol!

        You're suggesting that because you have no idea what to do. So obviously, move to another platform is the response people give instead of encouraging them to actually learn something useful instead of a platform 99% of internet marketers use.

        Reaching new heights is the way to go! I still am, and always will be. I come along snags that stop progress, but when I work through it, I become a lot more effective.

        I checked out your site, it looks like your newsletter module is in the left module position. Okay, check this out, this may possibly be the best solution for you. It is an extension that enables you to manage all your subscribers in the joomla admin AND mass mail everybody!
        jNews - Joomla! Extensions Directory

        It might seem a bit robust at first, but I assure you it will make your life easier. It is one of the best solutions out of ANY CMS.

        If you need help with that, I am here to help.

        If you don't want to do that, I recommend following CMA01's advice. You could disable the current module or plugin, then create a new one, in the "Left" module position, put in your code, and enable it!

    Okay, I think you're overthinking this way too much. Can you send me the link to the site so I can see it first hand?

    you can view all the module positions at yoursite.com/index.php?tp=1

    There you will see where the position is of the newsletter. You can disable that newsletter, search by module position, and then create a new module like CMA said as custom html, paste your code and then select the module position you would like for it. Then it is done!

    It is a process that SHOULD take about 5 minutes. Theres also other extensions you might like for this instead. Send me a link, I'll check it out.

    I'd suggest moving to Wordpress, but I can guess that 3-4 replies probably contain similar advice. Joomla is a clunky mess IMO.

      A good carpenter never blames his hammer. Joomla is one of the most widely used CMSs in the world, and by default the galaxy! This is not a Joomla issue, it is a user issue...
