How To Protect my eBook from Leakage?

There are only a few things you can do to slow it down but unfortunately it's impossible to stop. You could end up spending more time trying to close these forums down than you're own marketing.

I've had my stuff show up on them and you just have to take it on the chin. Unfortunatley it's part of the business.

You just have to make it harder for them.

Set up membership sites for your products behind passwords and have the content on the site instead of a pdf. Have all the training on the site instead of pdf's and downloads.

Try passwording your pdf's.

As I said all you can do is make it harder for them so they move onto the next product to share.

If you build a list of loyal subscribers then these will be the ones that buy from you and support you. Just look after them.

The people sharing wouldn't have bought anyway so don't worry about too many lost sales.

I've tried to prevent it. But if you close one URL with your leaked eBook down, two or three new ones pop-up. And to be honest it takes far too much time. However there is this dude selling a WSO, if I remember correcly, that brands the buyers eBook with their PayPal email on every page in the background. A lot of people don't want to get their PayPal out in the open and be known as a scammer, so this could surely bring the leaking process down a notch. Can't seem to remember nor find the WSO I was talking about, maybe I am using the wrong keywords.

The prevailing theory seems to be that you cannot stop it, which sadly is true, however that does not mean that you just turn your back and do nothing while bad things happen. I have moved to the shell and core product model.

Here is how it works, you create a container, (a shell) which holds some content it is valuable but it is not the main product, inside the shell is a login, (desktop software model) once you login you can then download the "core" product, from inside the software, now this is not a total solution and there really is not one, but anything that you can do to slow down the process of loss of product means that you are in fact making more money.

The thing is with so much free product out there, you have to sort of choose when you want to protect a product, and when you just want to put it out there.

With websites like two cows and other software related websites that deliver millions and millions of downloads per day of Free software, you have to think wow, where is the marketplace, share ware is a business model, and it is something to consider.

The best that you can do is to determine when a product is "valuable enough" to take steps to protect it.

Personally, I was glad the first time I found my stuff pirated on several forums.

If nobody wants to steal it... it's probably not worth much.

As Ross said, these guys wouldn't buy anyway.

Besides, my money comes from the back end, I don't rely on eBook sales as a source of income. I sometimes put a password but I'm more focused on creating new stuff and promoting.

Maybe in future I will worry about such things.

In all honesty, I wouldn't worry about it. If people are
wanting to leak your book, then they will. There is no
way to protect the information that is inside it.

One way I could think of is instead of selling a standard eBook, put it into a Flash or Adobe Air application. People would have to read it on your website instead of downloading it, but would make it nearly impossible to steal (unless someone actually types out the entire thing).

You cannot stop it but thankfully it is not such a problem as you might imagine.
My best advice is do not spend to much time or money worrying about this.
Instead concentrate on making sure that your ebook will bring you in other streams of income whoever hands it falls in, paying customer or not. Make sure you advertise your other ebooks in it and where people can buy them.

Just think about bottled water. Water is free from the tap so why do so many big businesses make so much money from selling it?
