Exactly how much does your domain name effect your rank in search engines? Meaning, if I have a brand new site with 0 backlinks, but its domain is, say, qwertyuiop.com, if someone searched "qwertyuiop", would I rank high in the results? |

With 0 backlinks, most likely not. The domain name means very little.

| It's hard to know for sure how much the domain name actually matters. If it does in any way, it's not much. I've had totally irrelevant .info domains rank for highly competative keywords. I'd say, get a domain that fits your niche and don't think too much about it.

The domain name is really important. You must get a .com to get high rankings. But if you generate many article backlinks using the keyword as anchor text back link you will get really good rankings.

I would have to say its a toss up... all depends on the search engine. I have noticed that with google it doesnt matter much and with yahoo/msn it matters alot. --thanks |

The name of a domain name absolutely affects your ranking. I bought a domain for a search term I know of with no competition. I have done absolutely zero marketing or SEO for it, and I continue to do nothing while it pulls in leads for me. That means 0 links, 0 articles, 0 advertising, nothing. As soon as it was indexed, I ranked #1 in Google for the exact search phrase and have stayed there for almost a year now. No guesses here. I just registered the domain with the keyword, put up a squeeze page, got indexed, and I'm sitting at #1 in Google. I'm not saying you are guaranteed these same results, but in my case there are no variables that could have pushed me up to #1 except my domain name (which has my exact search phrase/keyword in it). The domain can be effective only if you have any backlinks and content, otherwise how Google will find your site? The <title> tag is also very important. |
