What's This Called and How Will It Rank?

Hey Warriors!

I was doing some keyword sleuthing today and I noticed someone outranking me for a phrase with a domain. I THINK it's called a subdomain, but I don't know. I normally only do add-ons.

Please let me know what this is called and also, would this method rank well or is it better to do it some other way?

For instance: Let's say my phrase is "plr article pack" or whatever. If I make my URL look like this:

plr-article-pack.tiffanydow.com

How would that rank? And would it be better to do tiffanydow.com/plr-article-pack.html?

That structure is called a subdomain. The other one is called a subdirectory or a subfolder.

There are probably as many opinions as to which would rank better as there are people who have sites like that. I tend to use subfolders and those rank pretty well. I have tried subdomains and the results for me have been pretty much the same as with the subfolders.

In my experience, I have not seen much difference in overall ranking between the two.

For what it is worth, I agree with all JMichaelZ said. having a subdomain DOES persist the keywords over the domain, but that can actually dilute everything. It ALSO complicates the ability to use cookies and SSL. So you have to weigh everything.

Cookies follow a domain name, and SSL validates against a domain name and requires it to have a unique IP address.

I would recommend you to choose a subdirectory like tiffanydow.com/plr-article-pack.html
There is no very big difference, however, I believe that it looks like more solid and reliable for a user (according to a buyer psychology explained in few ebook).
    Hope that helped you.
