Sorry to offer such a non-helpful reply, but I'm not aware of that information being available anywhere (and don't really see how it could be)?

The figures, if anyone did ever manage to collate them from PayPal and every credit-card issuing-house in the world, would be terribly "open to interpretation" and perhaps "distorted", anyway?

Actually Paypal, being mostly an online processor and credit card aggregator is an infinitesimally small segment of the very competitive credit card industry. Paypal is still very much an itty bitty player in most markets.

Other that PayPal accounts, I thought PayPal was one of the "big dogs" in the credit card processing arena. Is that correct?

I use paypal. I have only used a credit card online twice, and bought a visa gift card both times. It was inconvenient and I only did it because the company didn't take paypal. When a big company gets hacked, I don't want them getting my credit card info. Of course, if paypal gets hacked, its the same thing. We can only hope.

PayPal claims it has 98 million active accounts worldwide.

In the United States alone, there are about 176+ million credit card holders. VISA, alone, has issued 1 billion credit cards worldwide.

        Do the math.

PayPal is so much helpful with much more security, it helps you so much paying in the internet without even typing your security info each time you buy something.

Plus PayPal can help you sell your stuff also. It's totally free to open an account. Just go the the website and click on "sign up" and submit the information that is requesting. You will discover the benefits that could gain from PayPal when you watch their tutorials.

Maybe this can help you warriors

The markets you are targeting may have a tendency of using one more than the other, so you need to be more specific or, if you don't want to give away your niches, you should test it. Let us know the results

Payments I mostly receive are credit card payments, PayPal payments are second, and every now and then the occasional check comes into play.

I think it's more of a comfort - convenience thing for the purchaser. In my own personal experience I simply use PayPal whenever it's offered. It's push button payment as opposed to typing in my name, address, card number, etc. Rarely if ever Do I use a credit card or any other form of payment.

I like to buy and go, as I am sure most other people do.

We have about 10% of customers using paypal.

PayPal is great, the only negative is that you'll get a significantly higher chargeback/refund rate compared to credit cards since making fake accounts with fake data is incredibly easy and PayPal supports "high risk countries" the credit card companies stay away from.

We see most problems with PayPal payments from the former soviet union and asian countires, that's 95% of all "problem transactions" for us. Only absolutely positive experiences with customers from the US, CA, UK, EU using credit cards.

In the IM world and ebay PayPal payments are pretty common. In the real world of corporate (small to large business) ecommerce credit cards dominate. There are some businesses starting to use PayPal (like TigerDirect) but it is still fairly uncommon. While there are 90+ million PayPal accounts I'll bet the majority are related to ebay accounts primarily.

for bigger e-commerce solutions I think most people choose to process with someone other than paypal for cost reasons. For small business and internet marketing, ebay, amazon and the such paypal is king. It's also a lot easier for the average joe to setup a paypal and start accepting payments versus using other ecommerce solutions. Some of which require a little more technical setup.

      Hi,

You can't do online business without online payment possibility. And, more and more people are using the online shopping options. The survey of Federal Reserve Bank of Boston shows that appr. 78 percent of Americans have a credit card and 80 percent have a debit card.

I read in a recent poll made by Gallup that 88 percent of all online purchases are made with credit or debit cards. Accordingly, Paypal is widely accepted, and there is still opportunity to develop their market share - especially if they reduce the cost of using.

I use the Paypal and have a merchant account, too.

You may be turning away potential business if fail to accept more payment options, I think. As I experienced, Paypal is suitable for relative low selling level. If you are make appr. $3000 monthly sales, then it's time to use a merchant account, too.

But, the experience of others may differ from mine.

      All the best,

      Sandor

Alexa is correct in that you could never truly quantify it but I always work on the princible that PayPal is free and easy to set up and people can pay with credit cards as well as from their account funds so you get the best of both worlds.
