WP Blog Problem - Can't Upload Images (anymore)

Hello Warriors,

I have a WP blog that I started a few months ago. A week or so ago, it stopped allowing me to upload images. I get the following error.

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 48234496) (tried to allocate 13056 bytes) in /home/puppy/public_html/wp-admin/includes/image.php on line 138
I see the "out of memory" part and don't know what that means. My site is only using 40mg out of it's 500mb limit. I can still upload other things (ie videos) with no problems but just not pics.

Would anyone have an idea. I'm sure this is something boneheaded on my end... just not sure what it is.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Just a thought. Have you tried clicking on the "browser uploader" button rather than trying to use the flash uploader. I find the flash uploader unreliable, but the browser one usually works for me.

Ask your host to increase the allocated PHP memory - in the php.ini file.
(it has nothing to do with the disc space used by your site)

I have a reseller package from Hostgator. Do I need to go to them or can I change it myself since I create the accounts?

rosetrees - yes, I have tried both on numerous occasions. I have a reseller account and have also upgraded and downgraded the account hoping to "toggle" something. Nothing is working. But again, the damn thing lets me upload videos and such.

Jay - I was on an older version when I posted the error above (can't remember which one) but have since upgraded to 2.7. Now I get the same error but it changed from line 138 to 142. No other difference.

    Thanks, Dave

If you have access to the php.ini file - then you can do it. (Most users on a shared hosting don't have access...)

That was it... Hostgator uploaded the file for me, allowed me to change it, and she works like a champ. Not sure why the default wouldn't work. Apparently the default didn't like 3mb jpgs.

      Thanks to all for helping!

Hmmm... why would anybody ever want to upload 3MB images? Did you consider your visitors' painful experience when trying to see such a huge pic?

I hear you... but this isn't a normal site. It was developed to show high quality pictures of some puppies I have for sale. Not many pics on the site but just a few high quality ones so they can get a good look.

By default most servers are set to 2MB limit on uploads.

Dave I agree with ThePensionGuy there.. Wow 3mb, you do realize that can also eat the heck out of your bandwidth ??

The image can be reduced in file size using the right tools and not lowering quality.

Also I would made sure I had leech protect is turned on because if a few people got ahold of that link with the image and spread it around it would not take long for that bandwidth to be gone..

Good point guys... I just needed to upload 2-3 of those pics but after your comments... I think I'll open up photoshop and tinker around a bit.

    Thanks!
