The Importance of Narrowing Your Niche/Market

I stumbled across this article from April on Inc today.

How to Narrow Your Target Market

Interesting stuff... a lot of which has been discussed here, but is often overlooked.

I think the challenge a lot of people face when they first dive into the internet marketing space is they find a niche, and assume they're done. But in reality, you have to keep digging deeper until you find that balance of focus/profit potential within that niche.

One of the best exercises I ever did had me define a market and keep narrowing down to one person. In other words, one person in the world was my market. Then go backwards through the levels I created, and find the level that would offer enough revenue/profit potential, and was focused enough to make sense.

We tend to think bigger is better, but in this case, narrower is better.

Excellent point! So many people online try to go wider instead of narrower and as a result end up not being able to attract anyone.

I have personally found that the more targeted you get the better results you will have, and the more happy your clients will end up being!

      Travis,

Wise man wrote that article. This principle has long been in the selling. If your audience is more narroved / targeted, you can focus on them more precisely. You'll understand their wants better, consequently you can meet that requirements better.

And everybody (you and them) will be happier.

      Best,

      Sandor

Great article I once met the Great Sam Walton many years ago when I was running a small business this was back before the huge growth of the walmart back when there were just a few stores mostly in Arkansas, I found him to be a presence in a room and I can tell you that his ideas about the volume pricing model were both aggressive and intensive, great content, thanks for the link.
