I believe I have a great product

but I really don't know the best way to market it. I thought by coming to an internet marketing forum with people who know about this sort of thing I'd have more luck than jumping in head first.

My service/product.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post the link to my website but my service or product is custom made paintings. Basically you provide us with a photo or image you want painted and I have one of my artists paint it for you. I've had a look at other companies that do this and their websites are ugly, there prices are high, not to mention their paintings don't look as good.

Marketing
I've used adwords in the past for another site of mine and I do have a $100 credit google gave me a few months back that I'm going to use. I know there are certain ways to set your adwords up to get the most out of your money so I'm in need of any advise on how I go about doing it. Now I know there are other ways to sell a products online, obviously what I do is a little different to others so I'm guessing not all methods of advertising will work for me. Is there anyone here that can advise me on the best way to sell a product like mine.

P.S please let me know if its ok to post a link to my site.

Thanks Brad

Congratulations on getting this far. Now it's time to expand what you've built into a profitable business. You may think it's a great idea... but you still need to sell people when they arrive at your site.

First and foremost, you need to create and implement a stronger selling system. And you need to do this before attracting affiliates… setting up JV’s… or spending your money on PPC. What you have is a basic business foundation - with a service, capable suppliers and an order process. But you to connect emotionally with your audience? and compel them to order now.

There are lots of ways to drive traffic to your site. But you’ll still need to gently influence prospects, build your credibility and alleviate their fears - so more of them buy from you once you get them there.

Think about the different niches you could target and set up a separate domain or sub-domain for each as a specialized service for that particular market and then you can target specific keywords. The pet market (as Jill mentioned) alone is huge and many pet owners love to spend money on anything related. But you need to hit the right hot buttons in order to instantly build that connection which ultimately leads to the sale.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like some ideas to improve your sales copy.

        Robert

I would suggest researching keywords in your niche and going with SEO. Unfortunately $100 with google adwords won't take you very far.

I haven't done SEO work in years, I ended up giving up as Google kept changing its rankings. I spent so much time on one site I managed to get it ranked at no 16, a few weeks later it wasn't even ranking in the top 100. It stayed like that for years. Even though its on the first page at no 9 now SEO still frustrates me and the time it takes I don't really have.

As far as adwords go I was actually planning to use it only for search results on key words. I think I would have better luck selling if someone was actually looking for a service like mine rather than someone seeing an add on a website and taking a nosy through the site out of interest. For me if I was able to make 3 sales with $100 worth of advertising I could easily recoup the cost and re-invest in more advertising. Who knows though, as I said I really have no clue as to how to go about this.

Any way my website is PicPainters dot com for those interested. Maybe someone has an idea

WSO = Warrior Special Offer. Will cost you $40 to list. Not such a silly idea. It might just catch and get you a couple of orders (then you bump it back to page 1 for another $40). The problem with Adwords is keyword identification. What keywords are people going to key into Google? Identify those and you're more than halfway there... regards Allen

      Thanks for that. Sig added

I'm guessing my key words will be Custom, Made, Paintings, Photo, Painting.

WSO sounds good, I'll take a look at that

You can test it, but most WSOs are services and products related to Internet marketing. Not sure how well custom paintings would sell in the WSO forum.

I wouldn't put a link to it in a post. That would be self-promotional and that is what your sig file is for.

This is not the best place for that IMO. I go into the WSO's to find marketing goods, not crafty paintings of my family.

Brad, you can safely add a link in your signature file. Look for the link above that says "User CP" and a drop down menu will appear and give you some options.

Personally, without even seeing your site, I would consider focusing on the local market first.

People want these types of things for very personalized gifts. So, having some pages on your site that are seasonal in keywords as well as some that discuss birthdays, graduations, etc. Reasons why people need what you are offering as a gift and the whole sentimental value behind it. Perhaps some history about how oil portraits were done in the past, and how much easier it is to now send in a photo and get the same desired results.

You can do some free marketing via youtube and show the works off. If you can dominate your local state/area first then the rest of the internet will come much more easily.

Thanks for the info, A youtube video sounds like a good idea, my local market is Bali which I am member of a large Bali Expat forum and offer %50 discounts to members though my sig. I try to stay active.

I noticed an Australian company like mine using a groupon like website to advertise their product at a %60 discount. They're sitting at 1000+ likes now on FB because of it and picked what seemed to be 7 or 8 sales. Maybe that could work

I really don't think that there would be anybody that would think that you are trying to promote your custom made paintings website if you posted it. Post the link or put it in your sig. The advice that you get will be a positive thing, as others will learn from it too.

It sounds to me like you need to create a business plan. In your business plan, be sure to include the following information.

What use does my product/service have?
What type of people/businesses would pay for this product/service?

You should give away a few freebies to see what people say about your service. This way, you have something to put on your site that shows your quality of work, as well as having those people tell their friends about a nifty new product/service.

Then make a website that you can use to build your portfolio, as well as adding content that will attract potential buyers.

Okay, your work is quite impressive. As suggested by a few fine Warriors, I'd do some serious keyword research and then use you $100 Google Adwords deal promoting it.

There's also another free Google deal floating around for $75 in free ads. You'll have to set up a separate account to get it. I've seen it on a lot of blogs lately and also on Youtube. You can probably do a search for it and find it.

You might also want to seek art blogs and post intellegent comments, which should be no problem. Many will allow you to also post a link to your site. Most people do this for backlinks, which is great.

You'll get that benefit and hopefully you can participate in discussions where it will be okay to encourage people to check out your work. After all, painting is a visual medium. Good luck and welcome.

I think that "read more" link is a bit too small on the home page - the one on how to order. I'm feeling a bit boxed in or confined on that page as well for some reason. Perhaps too much going on?

I clicked through to look at the oil gallery, and on the last picture there was no way for me to escape the picture viewer. I can't even go back into the site without closing the tab out. Perhaps a plugin not correctly configured?

You may want to consider not just focusing on a specific market area, but also starting with a specific group - IE pets. So, here is another idea. You can interact with pet forums, and link to a page on your site which shows all pets on canvas.

There are a bazillion different ways you can chunk this down into easier to handle bites, so I agree with above that you need a better focus on not just the business plan but the overall marketing plan as well - which really should not be limited to just internet.

You could also look into potential Joint Ventures with people who have lists in place and maybe an affiliate program to get others to promote this work.

For example, going back to my mention of pets above. If I had a blog that was all about cats, I would be interested in promoting your service to my clients to get their froo froo cats done on paintings. I have a friend as well who has some really expensive kitties and she wouldn't hesitate to accept a gift from me of her cats doing a family portrait, lol. But you are missing all those types of keywords that would help me find your site as a solution to be a really unique gift for what you can offer. This is why I suggest affiliates to do this type of work for you.

At first look it seems like your product is best suited for people with disposable income. So you may want to join forums or websites where these type people are located. One other thing you may consider is focusing your marketing on one specific niche. (i.e weddings, anniversaries, or any other special event)

    BKtaylor,
I'd look at either advertsing or contacting the owners (and offering a profit share deal) of photo hosting sites. There's loads now that offer this.
Also I know these are dieing now but I know in the UK photo development places still exist. I'd contact these and again see if they would be interested in a deal.
Here's a last off the wall idea...what about flower shops. Many of these now do a gift and flowers. Could you tie in with these perhaps?

Whatever marketing strategy you chose to use, you will either have to invest time or money. No time and 100 bucks will not get you anywhere.

No matter what niche you are in, with a TRILLION or so URLs in Google, unlike a few years back, marketing online is a competitive thing these days.

It takes effort, time, and money to get results and to keep these results consistently.

Since your paintings are custom and creative. You may want to think of a more creative way to promote yourself. One that would compliment your product and target buyers that are actually looking for artwork or custom paintings.

In the WSO area, people are looking for IM products and services. They are not looking for paintings.
So your results would be very poor if any.

You're falling into the logical trap of thinking that you can just advertise to everyone and you'll get sales from folks that may want custom paintings. While that is logical, in practice, it doesnt work and won't get you good results online. Time and time again, it's been proven that targeted traffic converts best.

    How should you promote yourself?
I say, stay away from adwords, unless you want to lose money. You know nothing about this stuff, so you would most likely lose your shirt. If you must, get somebody who does adwords to do it for you.

There are so many other ways you can promote your business online. Just pick a method and adapt it to your service.
Believe it or not, your custom painting business has nothing special about it, so that you couldn't adapt several other types of online marketing to it. The fact that you are new to IM is why you think it would be hard to do.

For example, here's a product that you could create for yourself...

Start Your Own Custom Portrait Business and Start Making Money in 24Hours Or Less!
Log into your account and watch the money flow in while relaxing on the beach...
Our studio in a box system will get you up and running today!

So basically, you could be an outsourced service to people who want to start a portrait
studio, but are too lazy or know nothing about painting.

They would basically be your affiliates and would receive a percentage of every sale that
they send you OR they could just follow your model and build their own custom portrait service.

You could create a nice IM product with videos and PDFs that would take people step by step
into the way you guys make your portraits and show them how easily they could make money with
    you or on their own!

Slap it onto the WSO forum and I bet you'd make some money!

So you see how easy that was for me? Internet marketing methods can adapt to any
    business!

That's how you do it, if you wanted to post something as a WSO. Be creative!

You might want to try using software to help with your marketing efforts. SENukeX will take you right to the top of the rankings and Scrapebox is another tool that'll help build you quality links that'll give your site a boost. The adwords campaign your talking about won't take you very far with only 100. You might also want to try getting affiliates to help you market your product.

$100 in Google is not much. You need to target your advertisement to a particular area (like North east) or better yet, like a particular city like New York, Los Angeles, etc

First let me say I think you have a great product that people will pay for.

      Here's what I think.

I'm not sure where in the world you're located but I'd begin with your local market and I'd target people celebrating special occasions (weddings, graduations, birthdays, etc) and those people who want an alternative (or addition) to a regular family photograph.

One of the most effective and efficient ways of doing this is by getting local merchants to promote you. So let's take weddings for example. Contact wedding planners/consultants, caterers, dress stores etc and offer a finder's fee for every customer they bring to you.

Ask if you can leave brochures/advertisements at their business. Have them recommend your service and its a win/win. They get paid for not very much additional work and you get a customer.

You can do the same thing online by partnering with wedding related sites and agin offering them a piece of the action when someone buys through their affiliate link.

You mentioned others who offer this service have significantly higher prices. I don't know the market but sometimes customers associate higher prices with higher quality.

If you come in significantly lower your might be perceived as lower quality.

      Just something to think about.

I took a look at your website and my eye was drawn to the free shipping offer. IMO you should be telling people how they'll benefit from using your service. You should have testimonial (including artwork) from previous customers.

The site is good but needs to be tightened up.

      Additional revenue streams

I'm a former military pilot. Every pilot I know has a model or picture of the aircraft they've flown. Additionally many of the sailors I've known have pictures of the ships they've served aboard. You could tap into these markets.

Similar to pilots, racers also like to have pictures/models of their vehicles they've raced (as well as themselves). You can tap into this market.

How 'bout the athletic market. From Little League up to the pros. You can tap into this market.

There's a lot you can do. This was kinda off the top of my head so hopefully it isn't too scattered.

PM me if you have any questions.

      Kevin
