This article marketing is a bit of a mystery.
There appears to be two schools of thought...

1 - submit your article to as many sites and directories as possible.

The disadvantages of this appear to be that all those duplicate pages have little relevance to search engines, and consequently the links are of little value

Also, the owner of one directory might not be too pleased if we submit the same article to multiple directories and sites

2 - The second school of thought appears to be to submit your article(s) to only one directory

Not sure which is the recommended way to go. Any suggestions will be much appreciated

    Andrew,

I do a combination of the two.

I write and submit an articles to Ezinearticles.com (still the biggest and baddest article directory).

Once its published there, I then re-write the articles and mass submit it to the other article directories. If the articles is really good, I may re-write a few different versions to mass submit.

    But that's just me.

You really only need to submit your articles to one article directory to get results. Ezine Articles is the article directory of choice for most article marketers.

Although, submitting your articles to other directories doesn't hurt. It's very time consuming. The extra time spent could be used to promote additional products or writing additional articles to post to EZA.

    Hope this helps.

What are you trying to accomplish? If you are looking for backlinks to your sites, it wouldn't hurt to have a few articles spread around a bit to get you a variety, though I'd suggest concentrating your efforts on the top sites (and other related social networks, for that matter).

The best system I've found is this:

    Write five good articles.

Submit each of them to the top article directories.

From those five articles, create at two variations of each. Using article submission software, submit the variations to the rest of the article directories.

This system has worked the best for me. It provides good traffic via the top directories as well as great backlinks.

It depends entirely on what you are trying to sell with your
article. You have to adjust your article marketing to your particular
business. You get sales from people who are impressed with the
content of your article. Therefore your thought process should
be to find the best strategy to do that in your niche.

I agree with sticking with one or two of the biggest article directories. But if time is a commodity that you have plenty of, going ahead and doing mass-submissions will achieve you more backlinks. Also, I have found some of my articles be pulled and used (properly) on others' sites from some of the lesser known article directories.

I agree with KateD submit a unique article to eza then rewrite it and do a mass submission.

I also submit a unique article to associated content and select exclusive if it's written in a way that it's not obvious your promoting your site then you can get paid for getting backlinks to your site.

To take it a step further create blogs and add articles to them, this is better than all article directories if you ask me.

Also, there is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty, you don't need a unique article for each site, only those that require it.

trust me I know from experience

  • Submiting articles is fine, but unless you keyword rank your press releases and get in the top 10 spots on google it's a total waste of time.
But if you're like me and can get anything ranked on google it can pay off big. I find I can rank 90% of all press releases in Google top 10 spots.

As someone that has been using article marketing exclusively to run my online business I can tell you first hand that I've had success both with mass submissions and with single article directory submissions.

However, I believe the best results come from a hybrid approach where you focus on a select group of top tier article directories combines with some blogs and some additional web 2.0 sites such as Squidoo, Yahoo Answers, hubpages, Youtube...etc

Additionally, I personally like to have all of these articles vary their content slightly while simultaneously still focusing in on the same keyword phrases and utilizing the same article title.

    Respectfully,

I stick the core article on my own blog then use changed versions on top third party blogs, social networks and article directories.

Using article marketing automation and submit your article you can change the article around in minutes and submit to multiple places.

    Thanks everyone
there's a wealth of information there.

    Just a follow up question...

I just had an article accepted by Ezine Articles and it appears they must have liked it, as they made me an expert and put the article on their RSSBlog.

My question is, if I submitted this same article, or a modified version of it, to other directories, would EZA become a bit "sore" and withdraw that preferential treatment?

    Hi Andrew

Everyday we have someone write 5 articles, and someone else then submits to ezinearticles. Once published we then make some minor changes and submit version 2 by hand to about 12 other directories.

Each day James in my office then makes a video of each article and we distribute using Traffic Geyser. We then also take the audio of the video and submit to podcasting directories.

The final step is to post article version 2 to one of our "secondary" blogs, and article version 1 to one of our "primary" blogs, and then to do some social bookmarking.

The logic is that for every keyword phrase we target we want to have different pieces of media widely distributed to different sites.

Our system is pretty new though and we're still working out the kinks.

    Anyway I hope that helps!

      Lee,
That's a great system you have going for you and similar to something I started experimenting with earlier this year (prior to me 2008 System Seminar appearance).

Understanding it is new for your business I am curious if you have already start to see any tangible benefits from it. I would assume you have...

      Respectfully,
      Tim

        Hi Tim

We're just getting this up and running and so don't have all the stats available at this time. Also it's important to point out that I totally messed up the tracking and so it was hard to identify where each sale came from.

For example, we played around with creating loads of video content but the URL shown in the video didn't redirect through an ad tracker. We KNEW we were making a bunch of sales but we couldn't be sure if they were a result of the videos or something else. Very frustrating!

We're currently redesigning the process to incorporate different domains that redirect through ad tracking links so we can measure more accurately.

The whole process that we're currently using is profitable, but due to the limitations mentioned above, I was unable to figure out where the profitable 20% was after the first run.

After the second run we'll be able to track every output back to every input, and so I'm expecting we'll be able to quickly scale up and cut back the chaff.

Right now I can look at the project as a whole and figure out the total amount spent, and the total amount earned, but I want to be able to break this down to each piece of marketing.

With most of my marketing I'm happy to lose on the first sale because I have a very deep funnel in place, and I know my numbers well, but when chasing low competition keywords with videos and articles we're able to earn a profit right there on the 1st $27 sale. The attached continuity, and the backend sales, is all gravy.

        I hope that helps!

            Hi Lee

I have used just 2 videos so far on one of my websites and that traffic has seen a large jump.

I am preparing a program very similar to the one you described as I am sure that Video is very beneficial for traffic numbers

Its good to know that others are finding the same results
