Facebook Paid to Plant Negative Stories about Google

"Facebook has been caught secretly paying a top public relations firm to plant negative stories about Google in the US media."

Here's the full story: Facebook paid PR firm to smear Google | Technology | guardian.co.uk

And some people go all gaga over either or both of these big players. I say you just can't trust either one of them.

Anyway, what do you think of this?

This might explain why I heard some wacko on the radio yesterday going on and on about how google is a giant evil monopoly that knows everything about me, It's worse than Orwells 1984!!. I guess the loon wrote a book or something.

And then I changed the station.

It is kind of surprising because it is Microsoft which is said to be Google's biggest rival. I can't even understand why would facebook compete with Google? Don't they serve two different needs altogether? Moreover, facebook does not even face any threat from Google. Their social networking site, Orkut, is not a competition at all. It is way less popular. This news is just "business going dirty". Maybe it was against gmail as facebook is expected to start their own email service soon. Yet, the proper reason behind it is still mysterious.

Google and facebook are not competing for social networking space, or even search engine space. They are competing for user data. Google had been winning the data race, because we've given them permission to scrape every website on the internet. However, now facebook is winning that data race, because we're basically giving them reams of data about ourselves.

And these are not the only 2 companies in a race to collect our data. Why do you think MS paid so much for Skype?

Facebook unfortunately is known for these type of shenanigans, they were built on them. And now I think they are trying to make up for their huge mistake which is iFrame fanpages. While they are great for users, they allow a huge opening for Google to collect user data.

Now it's all about putting up more road blocks to collecting data.

Ironic relevant info regarding facebook HERE.

It's interesting to see the PR firm backtracking once they got caught with their pants down (from the Guardian article in the OP's link) -

Facebook's cover was blown when Burson-Marsteller offered to help write an op-ed for Chris Soghoian, a prominent internet security blogger. Soghoian challenged the company's assertion that Social Circle was a privacy threat and accused them of "making a mountain out of a molehill".

Soghoian was stonewalled by Burson-Marsteller when he asked them who their client was. He later published an email exchange between himself and Mercurio.
Cordasco said on Thursday: "Now that Facebook has come forward, we can confirm that we undertook an assignment for that client.

"The client requested that its name be withheld on the grounds that it was merely asking to bring publicly available information to light and such information could then be independently and easily replicated by any media. Any information brought to media attention raised fair questions, was in the public domain, and was in any event for the media to verify through independent sources.

"Whatever the rationale, this was not at all standard operating procedure and is against our policies, and the assignment on those terms should have been declined. When talking to the media, we need to adhere to strict standards of transparency about clients, and this incident underscores the absolute importance of that principle."

There's a rumour floating about that Facebook are working on a search engine. With the amount of data they have on their users, think of the level of customised results they could serve up for everyone.

If the rumour is indeed true, I think they could have a much more powerful engine than Google. Maybe this is them laying the early foundations?

At the same time there is a problem with Facebook as well. I almost never go to the page anymore because it bombards me with "wedding dress diets" and other things about weddings nonstop. Yes I may be engaged but I'm not actually planning my wedding yet... it's scheduled in 2014. I've got some time.

I feel I would probably get these same inane results from this "high specialized" search engine. Then again perhaps I am the only person alive who isn't always looking for things that reflect my real life status. Giving me these ads "makes sense" to Facebook because I'm engaged. I'm just not planning a wedding at the moment, despite that fact.

      Hi jwardz,

      You are right.

The phenomenon is not new, as I see it. Does not mean anything than a fight to the data of users - so to speak increase their market share.

But... it is increasingly difficult to avoid to give your data somewhere, if you build a business.

well, there is a right way and a wrong way of advertising on there.

I fully admit, I'm not fully experienced advertising there, only been a couple months. and bought a few products to get a handle on it to do it properly, the more i do it the better I will get; my first impression is they take advanced of those who are not doing their ads correctly the first time around, I'm slowly but surely tightening up my campaigns as of a few days ago, I gotta wait a bit before I start to see the numbers come in, one of my campaigns has a 25% CTR based on the actions performed.

        So I'm getting there

Very simple. Facebook is afraid of googles impending release of its social network product, and is trying to preempt it with spreading negativity around googles social products.

Its no secret LARGE amounts of time and traffic are being spent on social networks (primarily facebook), and if google ever wants to see some of those potential advertising dollars they need to get in the social space fast.

Given googles mass reach, facebook ought to be somewhat scared.

But I dunno, I agree with the creator of this post, you cant trust any one of these bigshots. But hey, I still love and use both. Wont really help switching to Yahoo and Myspace because this kinda stuff will always happen.

People are making too big a deal out of all of this, its not like its gonna make you any richer. For FB and Google on the other hand, billions are at stake, and since they're not sharing I could care less as long as they both keep driving traffic to my sites i'm happy

They are ALL data mining companies at some level - that's not a secret.

Big corporations have done this kind of marketing offline for years - why is it surprising to see it online?

What shocks me is not that Facebook and Google would deliberately try to smear each other - but that PEOPLE are so willing to ignore the widespread use of their personal data and not question why so much is collected or how it might be used.

        Kay, point taken!

Anyway, it's stunning what I heard from people about hand over their data:

        - "I'm making my things legally, so I have nothing to hide"

        - "Who cares? Collect it if they want"

        - "I registered only to Facebook and Twitter"

        - "Not a biggie, what they can do with my name and email"

        - and so on.

After only the first problem they're going to realize that it would have been better to be cautious.

        Greetings,

Just one example...Google has applied for a patent that will allow it to listen in on you, using the mic built into many PCs:

Google developing eavesdropping software ? The Register

The idea is to use the existing PC microphone to listen to whatever is heard in the background, be it music, your phone going off or the TV turned down. The PC then identifies it, using fingerprinting, and then shows you relevant content, whether that's adverts or search results, or a chat room on the subject
Some call this "data mining", I call it spying...Not to mention that off-line compainies don't have access to my mail, my phone calls, my computer files, my business activities/sales/traffic, and where I surf online.

And those companies don't follow me around with some spokesman showing me a different ad everytime I change aisles in Walmart.

Sorry Kay, but I don't see much comparision to the data mining done off-line and the data mining done online.

That's pretty funny. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black! But regardless, I don't feel very sympathetic towards google. So many legitimate marketers were negatively affected by the changes to the algorithm. It would benefit the public if google had some serious competition from a site like FB.

Search engine traffic is BROWSER traffic compared to BUYER traffic in ebay. So if FB was able to create a search engine separate for buying products on the fanpages of FB, there would likely be higher conversion rates for people who arrived at your FB fanpage through the "commercial" search engine vs. any other search functions in FB.
