Lots of Clicks, few conversions

Hi, I'm not sure if there's a concrete answer for this but here goes. I have an affiliate site, all Amazon products and it's been steadily climbing, now about 5 from the top for SERP. In looking at my Amazon results I have 70 clicks this month and not one sale. Last month the same thing. Any ideas why this might be?

Depends on the niche I think, but Amazon clicks can be tyre kickers... looking there, buying elsewhere...

That can also be very true.

Plus, 70 clicks to your site for the whole month is nothing. You should get 70 targeted visitors per day.

If you would get 70 clicks per day to your site, you should see one or two sales every 2-3 days.

I'm not an amazon expert, but 70 clicks just isn't very much. I'm pretty sure Amazon is a big numbers game.

Your site looks nice, but it confused me about one thing:
The links going to amazon don't make it clear you leave the site. I was expecting to click through to an on-site article and was not-happy surprised when I landed on amazon.

Now you might say the clickthrough to amazon is the goal, but when it disrupts user expectancy, it's not likely to lead to a sale.

The actual link to your on-site post though aren't even recognizable as links. Talking about the section headlines here.Didn't notice the read full story links at first. Why's that? Because they are separated in a box. That makes them look unrelated to the above content. Visually misleading and not intuitive. I'm not saying this to complain, but to give ideas for improvement. Remove the box around that link and it will make obvious what belongs to what.

If it were my site, I would try to get the reader browsing my site first and make it very clear when he is going to leave to amazon.

Many sites have these 'buy from amazon' buttons. I don't know if they are more successful then those surprise links, but I like them much better. If I click those, I'm likely to buy, but if I just land on amazon by accident, I'm not likely to buy.

And I would open the amazon links in a new tab/window. So if someone doesn't like the surprise exit to amazon, he still has your site open.

        Just my quick thoughts...

        Ralf

          Hi Ralf

That's exactly the kind of feedback I need. I guess sometimes it's hard to make an objective call on the user experience on our sites. This makes perfect sense ! It will be interesting to see what heppens, perhaps the clicks will go down but the conversions will be better ( heck, anything is better than zero ).

I agree with Ralf's opinion about your site. (It is a nice looking site, so well done on that point.) My question is your traffic. How much do you get daily because it seems as if you may need to drive more targeted traffic to your site. (The more eyeballs the better, and the more targeted eyeballs even better.) On some of your pages there was no call to action. (The amazon buy button is a good example.) You may want to look at that.

If you haven't considered it, guest blogging, forum posting, article marketing (all with links back to your site) may be something to consider in order to drive more targeted traffic to your site. Be encouraged, you have a good foundation.

Possibly some of the link text has been changed. You could try some split testing, and see if a variation of the anchor text you are using works better. Maybe try simply "100s of reviews on Amazon", or "Click for more reviews from Amazon" or something along those lines. I agree with Ralf that you don't want to surprise the reader with an amazon site if they are expecting something else.

With split testing, you can use some different concepts on different posts and see if one works better then the others. You can setup different ids on Amazon and use the different ids for the different links so you can see how each is doing. You want to look at clicks/impression for each to make a true comparison.

I just took a quick look at your site, and there was one thing that bothered me. The description of your product (the "why buy a pet trailer" box) was all the way to the right side. In fact, it was the very last thing I saw. If I were you, I would move it to the middle, so that it's the first thing that people see.

As someone who often buys from Amazon, I'm not going to check out reviews of specific models until I know for sure that I need the product. But, the way your homepage is laid out, you're trying to sell products before you tell people why they need them.

I'm currently working on an Amazon Associates site myself, following a guide I got from the War Room.. I don't have any products on the main page - just some information about the products. Maybe it would help you out to look.
(The Best Selection of Athletic Socks). I was promoting Amazon products before, using a completely different method that wasn't converting - so I went this route to see how it works out.

Lots of people in here ask the same question. Most of the clicks are people just looking around and maybe you need to improve the content and reel the customer in. Could you provide a link to your website?

Stay away from amazon in cj. They are paying like crap and don't convert well. Try to get a deal directly with the site owner you're promoting. Contact them and ask them for a direct deal.

Your site looks good, but there's one big problem. You're not selling anything on it.

What I mean is your sales copy doesn't exist. You're not getting them excited to buy. You're not getting them to feel anything. A "manufacturers description" is a short cut. Put some effort into writing sales copy for each product. Get them excited, push their buying buttons, then put a big fat image that says BUY HERE NOW! that forces them to click through to Amazon and buy it right away because they're so excited from what they just read on your site.

That is not there right now. You're about 50% done with that site imho.

If you are converting a 1.5% to 2% and you are only getting 70 clicks per month your sales are going to be nothing. You need a bit more traffic unless you can boost your conversion.

Taking a quick look at your site it appears that you have large images with your articles but they don't link to Amazon. Images are some of the best converters, it would be good to make clickable images to Amazon.

I also don't see a call to action at the base of the articles with an easy to see button.

I would also highly recommend a personal touch rather than just pasting the manufacturer's information. Anything you can to inject some personality is only going to help, especially with pet owners who are passionate about their pets.

I also don't see any sort of optin. Get those visitors on a list! You can sell them on the backend.

I would link to the images and use the product names for the image alt tags. Remove the link to Amazon from above the article - or use the product name for a text link instead. Outline the product features but with at least one text link in there. Mention the good and any bad points from the customer feedback and include a solution. Add a link to the customer feedback and another to the product page at the bottom with your call to action.

You should try and get more traffic in whichver way you can. 70 clicks a month is about 2 a day which isn't really much and its difficult to get a sale from that.

It's a little difficult to say since it is from amazon and not your own personal store. My suggestion would be to refine your keywords to buy oriented one and see how the results go from there.

If you are doing product reviews, be sure to include the good, bad, and ugly side so that your reviews are sought after.

Okay Gina K., here's what to do. Add a blog to the domain and write two or three endearing posts every week about your experiences with dogs and animals and how much you love them and all. Come from the heart. People love stories and relate to other people who care about their pets. Of course you'll want to incorporate the right keywords into the story and light them up with links to the money page.

And you don't always have to relate everything to your products. Just come from the heart. There are lots of things to write about. You might mention how much you loved watching Lassie on TV as a kid and it's no surprise you came to marketing doggy trailers. I remember watching Lassie back when I was a kid.

There was a multi-episode series of shows where Lassie got lost and through a strange series of events had been all around the country in the back of trucks, trains and every other possible ways a Collie can travel without a credit card.

After several weeks, Lassie's family threw in the towel and little Timmy took all her toys out to her favorite field to bury them. And with tears in his eyes, as he dug the hole looking at each one of here doggy toys, you could see Lassie in the distant horizon running toward little Timmy for a tearful reunion.

I remember blubbering like a baby watching that show. Do you know how many baby boomers would remember that if you wrote about it. Millions. My point is, if you manage to engage your readers enough so they relate to you personally they'll buy from you.

Why? Because you're like them and people like to do business with people like themselves. And, if they aren't in the market for what you sell, they'll refer you to friends who are. You might even consider adding more doggy stuff to your site. I've seen this a lot. If you do a good job at this and promote your blog as much as the money pate the business will come naturally. There's my two cents. Good luck.

      Hi

I am not an amazon expert but would suggest the following

      1.Add reviews...people like them
2.Display the content in bullet points, people like to read the specifications in bullet points rather than reading a paragraph
3.When somebody clicks on the photo of the product, he should be taken to amazon
      4.Display the prices
5.Have the option of buying in the upper portion of the screen(fold)...the buy button should be the most prominent thing..because you want them to buy
6.Have a sitemap( not related to conversions but then too it should be there)
7.Have About us,Privacy policy type of pages(believe me these create trust)
8.Have related products in the upper portion of the page (so that people dont leave your site)
9.Have a paypal verified, visa accepted type of buttons in the upper portion of the page (these create trust)
10.Start thinking in the following manner...."if I search the keyword pet trailer and land up on this site will I buy from this site" (for a minute forget that this is your site)...would people think that their $200 is going to actually get them the product

People buy a thing only when they have a surity that the seller will deliver the product (even if you are not selling it but Amazon is selling)

But you need to create trust to get people to the Amazon button and buy something

      Hope this helps

      Good luck with your website

      thanks
      Ankur

I know one thing that's missing... Prices. Make sure you put the price right next to the amazon button so that you know if the customer is actually serious about buying. I'd image your CTR goes down to a realistic number. From there follow the other advice given here.

I completely disagree with this. Additionally, I'm fairly sure Amazon only allows prices pulled from their API.

It can only help you to get people to click-through to Amazon where they are more likely to make a purchase OR purchase something else while tagged with your affiliate account.

With this kind of situation, I say it's all about the niche. There maybe a lot of visitors that have looked up your product but most are just window-shopping at e-bay and just use the information they gathered there to buy somewhere else. This happens.

That's right, Amazon don't allow prices unless they are pulled from the API, that's because the prices change frequently and the API does it for you.

I get better results by including the current price. It's a little more work, since I have to check them every few months, but it does cut down on the "tire kickers."

The only reason people would check your site out is to get extra information (reviews) about the product and whilst you site looks good you just need to make it firt its purpose bettre and don't worry 70 clicks isn't many ATALL. With amazon comissions being so low i might try and flip this site for some fast cash once it makes a sale or too if it isn't generating that much income.

    Hope that helps,

I too have no conversions from the traffic I'm getting. Can't even get them to opt in. I work full-time & have 5 very active boys, so finding the time to do all of that is difficult, but I still manage to be working on those things 2-3 hours or more everyday.

Because I don't always have the time, I got involved in both of the coops (I'm involved with Plug-In-Profits & have posted on their sight, too). I'm also using some of the other services that were recommended in the guide. Over 2k veiws so far this month & no conversions? With money going out & none coming in...I can't do that for long. I sure don't have the money to do anymore.

I need some cash coming in NOW!!! I'm looking for other streams until my PIPs gets to rolling & have not given up on it. I do have Clickbank account, but not sure what to do with it. I'm reading all the info I can find on different income streams, but get overwhelmed at times.

I am hoping someone would willing to work with me. Take me under their wing so to speak. I'm extremely new to all of this & at 50yo, I'm not stupid & I'm willing to do what needs to be done, but am a little tech challenged at times. I could be someones next great testimonial!!!! :-)

I always see Warriors in the Forums say they want to help others. Any takers? Or any advice, guidance or anything would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Just my opinion but you need to be more aggressive with keywords. Doesn't look like you have the right "buying" keywords. IMO you should write something like the following

    best pet trailers
    top pet trailers 2011
    pet trailers for sale
    cheap pet trailers
    buy pet trailers
pet trailers free and fast delivery
pet trailers discount/free/promo/coupon/put a power word here

If you don't target buying keywords you will only get people who are looking for information but are not ready to buy. For example, if I want to buy organic vegetables first I will look for information - then I will buy after I see the best deals and reviews.

People probably will not buy using "organic vegetables" as their keyword when they search on Google but a good buying keyword like "organic vegetables free delivery" will target those people who are really looking to buy stuff.
