How much traffic do I need?

Is there a rough guide as to the amount of traffic you need to make sales?

I appreciate this is extremely variable but I wondered whether you have an expectancy of, say, 1% of visitors clicking an offer and 5% of those buying?

In this case you would expect a sale in 1 in 2,000 visitors.

Any guidance would be very welcome.

I have no idea on how you're promoting your products, so it's hard to give an opinion... However, I think that 1 sale for every 2K visitors is terrible (unless you're selling a 4 figure product).

Different landing pages and traffic sources produce different CTRs (click through rate), but 1% is probably horrible in any case. On the other hand, 5% can be a decent conversion rate, but, again, it depends on many factors such as the quality of your traffic, your niche and the price of your product.

  • It depends so much on the niche, the quality of the traffic and the sales copy that it's really impossible to answer questions like that.

One thing worth always remembering is that presold traffic converts much better than most other firms. So, if you can get referrals, or people who are sent to a link through a review, you have the potential to do well with that traffic.

I was curious about the the standard conversion rating was and looked it up a year or so ago from a 2008 national index from some journal, actually found it in a book that cited the journal. I digress. The average was 2.5% and the highest was 25% being 1800flowers.com....

So depending on your conversion rating really, ideally I think everyone can agree, higher conversions means less need for traffic. Poor conversions higher degree of people.

Also the data didn't suggest how many clicks just final people to real sales.

Your aim in general is 2-5%

2-5 sales per every 100 clicks on an offer.

As per traffic overall, far too many variables for anyone to give you an answer on here.

There are those that focus on the number of visitors to their site they get, however I never truly understood why. The simple fact is that you can have millions of visitors just as a department store has thousands.

Depending on how you are promoting you are going to get one of two types of traffic. Window shoppers and Customers.

When I promote, I promote expecting every visitor to purchase or inquire. Every bit of my marketing is designed to offer the customer something they simply cant refuse, and other successful marketers do it as well. As long as your doing that you should expect everyone to buy and if they are not continue to refine your skills until they do.

Do not get obsessed with the amount of visitors any of your sites get. That just means you will be playing "the numbers" game. In my circle known as the marketer's lotto... where a marketer gets so obsessed with the ratio of visitors that they fail to see how targeted the traffic is.

Which would you rather? 100 visitors with 85 purchases, or 10,000 visitors with no purchases. The more targeted you make your efforts the better your odds of a sale, it has nothing to do with the number of people that surf by your site daily.

      Thank you for your reply.

Insurance quote comparison converts very well - as its a free service and people who find it were looking for that service.

But I am trying to build traffic to my other sites so that I can then tune the copy to improve conversions. 2.5% sounds extremely high to me (and I certainly dont get anything near that). But I will persevere.

This really depends on the niche you are in and how you are monetizing. This is something I would stop worrying about and I would just go ahead and take action. Plus if you use article marketing and other methods to get targeted traffic it will convert much better than if you just get general traffic. You will never know until you get to work and create the traffic.

I disagree with alot of what was said..

% conversion isn't the most important thing all the time.

What you want is earnings per click

    For example:

5000 people hit your site and you made 25 thousand dollars .. That would be $5.00 Earnings Per Click or visitor however you want to say it..

Now lets say that was 100 sales to make 25k

That looks like a pretty crappy conversion rate however I am sure many of you would take that and be thrilled

The reason nobody here can give you a for sure answer is because of the many possible variables involved that we can't see. This is why everybody always stresses testing, testing, testing. That's how you are going to get your answers.

If i told you i am about to send you 20,000 visitors to your site.

Or I told you I was about to send you 2 million visitors to your site....

which would you prefer....20k or 2 Mill.

I mean seriously.... you just answered your question.

The more traffic to your site, the better.

The more traffic to your site, the more sales and conversions.

Now while it does depend on if the traffic is targeted or now, you still need lots of traffic to make good money online.

You can make a sale with as little as 1 visitor, it depends how targeted your traffic is - simple as that.

Example: If you're selling golf shoes, for every 100 visitors coming to your site typing in the broad term golf shoes into a search engine you might make 2 or 3 sales.

But if you go even more targeted and optimize for ..

    adidas adipure golf shoes white

you will get a lot more than 2 or 3 sales for every 100 visitors coming to your website having typed that into a search engine.

You could quite easily make 10 sales or more for every 100 visitors especially if you do a quick price comparison.

The main thing to be concerned with is not traffic, but your conversion rate. With a good conversion rate, you can afford to pay more for targeted traffic.

To test your conversion rate, you need around 5000 targeted unique visitors.

I hear a lot of people saying don't pay attention to traffic but the newer people to business need to be careful and not misunderstand that. A crap load of traffic is ALWAYS a good thing if you can get it. What would you rather have, 100 people a day to try and monetize or 20,000 people a day to monetize? I've had both and I can tell you, it's a lot easier to make money off of 20,000 than it is 100.
