Domain value vs what someone would pay

I'm just curious about this.

Not sure where I got it, but there's a toolbar on my Firefox browser that links directly to a site that checks your site's value, backlinks, whois, etc. I thought I'd check 2 of my sites just for fun and was pleased to see that they're both in DMOZ. Even more pleasing is that one is valued at over $2,000, the other around $500.

My question is, would this represent what I would expect to get for it? Is that what people would pay or is it just a guideline - a figure to ask if I chose to sell the domain? I mean, I realize there would be some negotiation involved, but I'm just wondering how that works - what to expect, etc.

Thanks.

Sylvia

Your site "value" and the amount of backlinks you have is essentially going to be null and void when it comes to selling your sites.

All investors or potential buyers are going to be concerned with is the quality of the domain itself (age, keywords, etc) and the profit it is bringing in.

Of course you may find the random buyers that find perceived value and have attachment to your site that would be willing to bid higher...but other than that the sites and toolbars that tell you the value of your site are in reality...worthless.

Selling a domain is pretty much the same as selling real estate, how does it compare with other similar sites that have sold, what income did they have?

I'm wondering where did you get that info from.
Go to Flippa and find out for yourself.
That's not necessarily true at all.

Beauty (and value) is in the eye of the beholder. I just sold a stupid domain for $900. I had a great site with income on Flippa and my best bid was $75. I currently have 4 or 5 really "valuable" domains that I haven't had a nibble on. Sold three sites last month in a group deal that I wasn't even going to renew. There is no rhyme nor reason to this. Put a domain or a site in front of the right audience and it will sell quickly. If you can't, it won't. As for online sites that claim to be able to set a value its been my experience that none of them are worth anything.

When you hear someone telling you what YOU can't do, they are usually talking about what THEY can't do.

The title of this thread is fundamentaly wrong. The value of a domain (or anything, for that matter) IS what someone would pay.
If an automated tool tells you your site is worth $10,000, but the market (bids, buyer interest etc.) is only saying $5,000- then it's only worth $5,000.

      Fundamentally, you too are incorrect.
That means you're aiming to the wrong people.
I don't "give away to the market' any of my keyword rich domains.
I find the right buyer and make the sale.
