when it comes to page result volume for a keyword/phrase (google comes up with larger number of course) which one do you go by to get a better gauge on which keyword/phrase to spend your time on?

Agree -you really should use them both as part of your research. Neither gives you exact data.

I use the keyword tools more as a comparative tool to see which keyword is better than the next. I never really expect to get a certain amount of traffic from a keyword. I just go after the keywords I feel are the best and accept whatever piece of the pie I get. If you want to know the truth, do a short PPC test to see actual volume.

Its hard for me to trust either one of them, if you think about it you are building the foundation of your business plan from that keyword research. If its flawed, which I believe it sometimes is you have spent tons of time and money for a keyword that doesn't get the traffic you hoped for or doesn't convert into sales.

I had an experience where I spent months of back linking and way too much money to rank on page one for what I thought would be a golden keyword based on Market Samurai research. It was a huge fail.

I think the best way to test a keyword is to set up a small PPC campaign and make sure your offer not only gets traffic but converts. I think in the longrun you will save time and money. Of course all the guru's are selling keyword research tools so you could trust them or do you own test.

    Anyways, good luck to you!

The numbers (Google & Yahoo) should always be taken with a pinch of salt. As a matter of fact, lots of SEOers, run PPC campaigns on keywords before they use them to build a site.

    Good luck.
