Firefox 2.0...Last Update...Now What?

The other day, I had my Firefox 2.0 updated and afterwards, the page I was
taken to said "Last update for 2.0."

Now, I assume that also means for security too, and since that is really my
main concern, I don't want to use 2.0 any longer than I have to.

But...I am hearing so many bad things about 3.0 that it makes me cringe at
the thought of upgrading, things like not being able to log in to sites that
are cookie based, terrible delays loading and other not so nice stuff.

I'm honestly torn as to what to do at this point.

Is using 2.0 now flat out dangerous since there are no more security updates
or am I safe staying with it?

And if I move on to 3.0, what headaches am I going to run into?

I am still using IE 6.0 SP2 with no problems, so I'd like to think I can
use 2.0 for FF as well.

What's the real deal?

Anybody know for sure?

I haven't had any problems with Firefox 3.0, I actually like many of the add on features it has which are good for internet marketing

It may be your computer or internet connection/isp

    What bad things?

My favorite "feature" in FireFox 3.0 when I use it on my iBook G4 is that the back button is disabled by default.

I guess I can understand that. It is kind of annoying to have to look at a handy giant green arrow and besides it's much more fun to go out and search through Google again or maybe spend a few minutes rummaging through my browsing history to locate what site I was a half a second or so ago.

      Thank you FireFox!

It's sort of funny though because Google claims that having a site that forces a back button to become disabled leads to a poor user experience. I guess you showed them now that they've come out with their own browser Chrome. Take that, Google! We're going to disable the back button willy-nilly!

Sometimes now when I load up Safari or Explorer I get confused. I just sit there staring at that back button and wondering what I'm supposed to do. Why is it pointing me to the left side of my computer? So ridiculous! I quickly disable them.

Anyhow, if you want to know how to enable the Firefox back button I'm not sure if I can be of much help as I've really started enjoying my backbuttonless lifestyle. But I think it has something to do with going to view and Toolbars and maybe customize or something like that. Anyhow I do see a couple wacky cartoonish arrows there.

Sort of makes me miss those days when Firefox thought it would be funny to randomly delete people's bookmarks without warning.

When I updated, I lost ALL of my bookmarks. It crashed all the time. I couldn't make new bookmarks. I tried restoring my computer to before I upgraded, but then version 2 wouldn't open at all. I could click on the icon, but nothing would happen. I tried unintalling version 3 and reinstalling version 2 and nothing either. I gave up and went back to Internet Explorer as much as I hated to. I'm going to try Google Chrome, but at that time they were still in beta. I'll probably try out Chrome after I format my hard drive.

That said, I updated my wife's computer and she has no problems with it other than it crashes all the time.

I've used FF3 quite a lot and never had any problems but I've switched my allegiance to Chrome lately and haven't looked back.

Andy, what about security issues with Chrome? Is it secure?

Plus, what about transferring bookmarks from Firefox?

What kind of support can we expect to get from such a big company?

I ask because of my bad experiences with one big company by the name of
      Microsoft.

I just did my last FireFix 2.0 update also ...

Hubby has FF3 on his computer and he hates it. Well, he hates FF period. He doesn't see anything wrong with IE.

From what I've seen of FF3, I don't like it either. Why did they have to change the layout? Why fix what wasn't broken?

I wish I knew the list of plugsin that were not compatible with FF3 ... see if my plugins are on the list. Is there such a list?

Right now its secure in the same way that FireFox was a little while ago. There's not enough uptake to make it worth the time to bother looking for holes in it.

That's not to say if its ultimately secure or not (bound to have some issues as with any piece of software). Google's team will have done a pretty good job on security and I'll bet good money their response time to issues that do arise will be insanely fast.

Plus, what about transferring bookmarks from Firefox?
Imported all of mine without a hitch.

You can be pretty sure that Chrome is part of Google's long term strategy. I would be pretty amazed if they didn't continue active and aggressive development of it. As home computers head more and more towards being web browsers with frills Google want to be a major part of that and Chrome is part of that strategy.

I'd just like to add some emphasis to what Mike is saying here. *Balance* your choice of browser with good anti-virus protection. But please don't assume that having up-to-date AV means you don't have to keep your browser up-to-date.

Most of the recent browser vulnerabilities have not been detectable by even the best AV products for several days and absolutely required updating the browser itself.

Quick question about Chrome. Does it have the same "tabs" feature as
Firefox. I'd be lost without it because of all the tabs I have open.

Yup. Full tabbed browsing support with a couple of key differences.

          - Each tab is its own process so if one dies on you the rest keep working.
          - The navigation/address bar/back/forward etc are inside the tab rather than above it.

Sorry, one last thing...I use Roboform. Is the transfer over of all your
passwords easy like it was from IE to Firefox?

Geesh, I don't even know if I remember how I installed Roboform when I
            went to Firefox.

I also keep Chrome on standby as my preferred back up browser, just to be on the safe side. Although in reference to Steven's question, I don't use RoboForm so I've not tried to transfer anything (such as passwords) from one to the other.

Chrome is in the moment not supported by Roboform - in this case you have stay with Firefox or Internet Explorer.

I got my FF2 upgraded to FF3 recently and So far so good.
I don't think you will run into any trouble using FF3, in fact , it's faster and it eats up lesser RAM than FF2.
You can easily manage or add new plugins and it's really more user friendly. Why not try?

I thought it was just me. Firefox 3 is a bad job. I also use Firefox 2. It's the best.

I like to use Opera as a secondary browser.

I like Chrome because of the way it shows you screenshots of all your sites.

Did a quick search of the forum, and found this thread-- http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...y-opinion.html

If your unhappy with Firefox and IE try a different browser,

Google Chrome - Download a new browser
Opera Browser | Faster & safer Internet | Free Download
    Apple - Safari

    All three are great alternatives.

No problems with FF 3 here but then again I tend not to have problems with new software and sometimes wonder if it is just people messing up because they aren't used to it yet.

Firefox 2 ought not be any more unsecured than IE6 so I wouldn't worry about it yet.

Firefox 3 is really good - just check the major plugins you depend on are compatible before you click the button!

I had one plugin which wouldn't work after upgrading when FF3 came out, still no update for it, but it was not something I used a lot anyhow.

Not something to worry about - go ahead and stay up to date.

I have FF3 on another computer and it works fine, but the main computer I use, just doesn't seem to mesh well.

I believe FF 2.0.0.16 was their "last version" but they kept updating to 2.0.0.20. I suspect they'll continue updating since there is still a lot of stiff resistance to FF3.

I did a kind of double take when I first started using Chrome, assuming all the features of the toolbar must be hidden somewhere!

I use FF3, IE7 and Chrome - but increasingly I'm transferring to Chrome. There are some things it struggles with - I find some forms don't display properly or accept data correctly and then I switch back to FF or IE.

You can have fun with the tabs - I discovered by accident that you can stack them together as tabs, or pull them apart as separate windows. Probably pointless, but fun.

FF3 is an improvement obver IE I think, but that's because
IE is clumsy. Most other browsers seem to run better in

The "Awesome Bar" (FF3's name for where you type in the URL) makes FF3 easily worth any trouble you have upgrading.

Don't remember what site you saw something on? Just start typing in any part of the URL, page title, or really anything about the site, and FF just KNOWS what you want.

The extensions I use haven't had any trouble working in FF3, either. (S3Fox, SEOQuake, Adblock, Stumble, DownThemAll)

    Hi Steven
I did the update, hated it! I should have taken screenshots so others could see it. it seemed very bloated, the navigation toolbar did a very irritating autocomplete based on browsing history

I uninstalled and went back to previous version. I have had no problems at all with the present firefox, the new one has all kinds of new features that for me personally are a pain and intrusive. plus I lost all my bookmarks, bookmark toolbar and all saved logins. Once I went back all was restored.
I use firefox all day and all the doodads added on wasn't something I wanted to get used to using.

for someone just moving to Firefox, it will be a nice change, but for me personally, not worth it
