List optin % - niche dependent?

I've spent the last few days testing and tweaking with popup domination and now wpsubscribers (same thing but covers footer and exit + allows Facebook connect button).

I have one site in the 'new to money making online' area with about 10 uniques a day (it's sitting mid page - still needs some link building) but getting about 3-6 optins a day which is around 30-60% and that's been each day.

My dog training niche is up to 150-200 uniques a day and getting maybe 1-2 optins. Note: this was with popup domination, I'm setting up wpsub now.

I tested a few different layouts and messages. Tried a few different designs and images and it was a fairly similar type of header and bullets. Offered fast results free, was related exactly to what they were looking for (it's all organic search traffic). I tried offering a newsletter, a free ebook download and even both at the same time.

So I'm left thinking that optin % is niche dependent? Does anyone else find this or is it just a case of I need to test more and you should be able to get around 10% (for example) in any niche?

If I had a single variant I've seen as far as optin % it would be location/cultural. Running a bunch
of sports related niche sites, the ones that greatly outperform in terms of optin % are
Those focused on the pan-asian sports vs. USA-based fanbases.

I know this isn't exactly pertinent to you but my advice would be to target culturally and maybe try to get some internationally focused traffic to improve optin%. Hate to say it but the US consumers are extremly hesitant to fill out obvious email marketing forms. Just how it is.
