The best strategy to reverse engineer your competitors websites

Hi Warriors,

Clearly a simple and effective way to outrank your competition is to reverse engineer their backlinks.

There are tools such as Market Samurai and Yahoo Explorer to see the backlinks...

But, in your experience, what's the best strategy to reverse engineer? For example, it's easy to reverse engineer blog comments or forum posts, but what about backlinks that are hard coded?

Is it literally a case of contacting the webmaster and asking for a link?

Any thoughts massively appreciated from Warriors that have 'seen it, got the tshirt'!

With gratitiude,

Craig

What do you mean by hard coded? If you mean at the bottom of a site, then often you can sponsor wordpress themes and get a backlink that way.

    Hi,

You may not like my answer, but I've been doing this for over 10 years so I don't say it lightly.

    Don't waste your time trying.

Just focus on getting your own.

There are many thousands of places to get them and lots of different ways to get them.

You won't be able to get them from all the same places so don't waste your time trying.

For example - you could never get my backlinks - since I have 200 of my own established sites that I use for backlinks and some relationships with other site owners who I personally know. You won't get a link on ANY of those sites.

Also a lot of people/companies get links based on relationships and things like speaking engagements or donations to events etc.

Since you don't need to copy their backlinks to beat them - don't bother, just make sure you have your own robust methods to get links and work that.

Exactly. Worry about your own sites instead.

@Andyhenry - Straight to the point... thanks my fellow Brit. Good old fashioned British honesty is what I needed. Thanks again. :-)

What a shame that some would suggest to NEVER reverse engineer...a total B.S.
In fact the biggest B.S. ever told regarding SEO. The blueprint to any success is duplicating what a successful individual has done.
Have you not heard "Imitation is the best form of flattery"? I don't know how Brits do their SEO, but be rest assured, reverse engineering and acquiring as many as the quality backlinks your competition has, and tagging that along with your own link building is what's called - Backlink Strategy on STEROIDS. It is a bird's-eye-view into the site that Google respects.

to use bogus examples as the one mentioned above, where he says "I have 200 sites of my own, so blah blah...." is just rubbish. He won't tell you that his 200 sites are not authority sites (brute honesty) and thus it's not the reason why he is ranking for whatever keyword he is targeting, chances are he is working his butt off to be on authority sites, and you can rest assure he doesn't own those. You will need more than "200" links to even be in the discussion these days.

So for the same guy that has tried to pull a bluff and discourage you, for trying what has worked for countless webmasters, i suggest you grill him more about "what makes him an authority to go against the tide and suggest, you should not waste your time. When, in fact, that's exactly where your focus should lie?"

I can promise you, he doesn't have a single key word ranking of any sort, and if he does, then it will take him YEARSSSSS, what would take folks like me few months to do massively well for real competitive KWs.

        Don't buy it.

With that said, the most important part of your reverse-engineering should be focused on which links could you benefit the most from and which you should do your best to avoid (in terms of your competitor's link). That's what you should master. I am sure there are numerous ppl here on the forum who has touched on it, and pick your own and get to it.

In fact, how about you just go view SEO Spyglass and their free videos. Now you should listen to those sort of ppl, not a wanna-be that spouts and claim i own "200 sites". Who cares? It only takes money to do so Now, if he was a bit open-minded, he would have realized that it doesn't take 200 sites to be an IM, and certainly that's the most telling part of his comment. 200 sites = "I don't know what the heck i'm doing and i'm stuck on an old advice and now i must tell others what hasn't worked for me" . )))) Not sure it's a club you want to belong in Pal. All the best.

I tend to reverse engineer keywords more than websites.

I look into the main long tail key phrases related with my main keyword and look for windows of opportunity.

Those places that allow me to put links on, and are already on first page are good candidates.

I personally do not try to outrank other sites reverse engineering them, but if I found them in properties I can put my links on, I´m right there beside them.

There is nothing wrong with one approach or the other, but I feel that if you are running after someone who is running before you, well... your chances to catch up are not that good. If instead you find your own ways, you can fly and land in front.

          Makes sense?

There is other reason for me to do this, that might not apply to you. When you start reverse engineering, you will see a lot of crap. Things I would never do. Back doors, sites spammed, sites hacked... I am too sissy for that.

I mean if the backlink is not from a blog comment.

From my understanding reverse engineering is seeing what websites your competitors have back links from and basically copying them.

    Correct?

But, if it's a genuine back link from the webmaster of a site - what's the best way of also getting a backlink from that particular site?

Buy a subscription to MajesticSEO or Ahrefs and start spying on their links.

Hard coded links? Have a good website. Ask for a link exchange. If that fails, bribe them. Actually there's so many ways to get a link it's hilarious.

Abesha is right. Imitate and exceed is the best strategy.

I've been ranking very well with spammy links in a niche that is impossible to have "quality" content. How did I do that? I copied my competitors.

Spying on your competitor's backlinks with Majestic or Ahrefs is just the start. Look at other niches at different levels of competition, see what they are doing to rank. Try to replicate their strategy in another niche. It helps a lot if you can code.
