The "What If...." thread...

I don't mean to sound like a John Lennon quote (Imagine...) but I was wondering where this would lead for most IMer's...

This may or may not apply to you but I am envisioning an obvious perfect world that is unattainable..don't hate me for dreaming though...

What if?.....

What if rather than half hazardly trying to use social media to their own advantage, they used it as it was intended?...to actually share cool stuff online?

What if they actually used bookmarking sites to share cool sites that they actually liked rather than focused on their own link building strategies?

What if rather than using digg for a shameless plug or backlink, they actually dug other news stories that they liked as well as added other people's stories in their diggs?

What if rather than professing that they knew it all (an authority on whatever subject), an internet marketer actually showed that they were remotely human and admitted that they didn't know occasionally?

What if bloggers...rather than writing pre-fab posts on things that they think they should talk about...instead wrote real posts on things that they actually wanted to based on what they were interested in in their own voice?

What if internet marketers used twitter as more of a getting to know you type of platform rather than a way to go on a rampant sales pitch party?

What if rather than methodically trying to sell to their list, an internet marketer instead, tried to befriend them first and actually connect to them?

Like I said, this would be a perfect world...I have just been giving a lot of thought to the social web and what it is supposed to ideally mean versus what it seems like the bulk of internet marketers actually use it for.

Why not present your really great ideas right here and now?

I never said I had great ideas...I have just been thinking about social media and what it was originally designed to be vs. what IMers typically do to exploit it.

This isn't a prelude to a WSO..this isn't a spill to some secret that I learned from a hermit who has been making $100,000 a day using arcane techniques. In fact, I don't have any ideas in relation to this.

I was just thinking that most IMers try to use social media in ways that it wasn't intended for....and I was kind of wondering what would happen if they actually used it for what it is rather than shape it with their own interest in mind.

Well, I mostly use social media to communicate with my kids. Frankly, I don't give a shit for what it was intended if it's traveling across MY wires or MY infrastructure. In such case I will use it as I wish.

          Hi Ldmilo,

Well for most of the options, they may just get buried and go un-noticed amongst the onslaught of bulk stuff from marketers. But for these options -

What if rather than professing that they knew it all (an authority on whatever subject), an internet marketer actually showed that they were remotely human and admitted that they didn't know occasionally?

What if bloggers...rather than writing pre-fab posts on things that they think they should talk about...instead wrote real posts on things that they actually wanted to based on what they were interested in in their own voice?

...which, are more related to the person's own property, rather than 3rd party properties, they might find that they build a following. And if that was so, they could find that their useful contributions to social media get more votes.

We all have a choice, whether to take a mass-marketing approach, or to focus on being real, genuine and showcasing our customer focused approach.

As for what could happen, anything can happen. If you happen to catch that wave at the right time...

It's a police and thief issue. Most social sites are set up with good intention. IMers exploit them. Webmasters of social sites change their rules, change their script. IMers find loopholes. It's a never ending story and it's improving everyday - I'm quite sure about that.

But, by no means does this make all IMer's losers. There are a lot of folks who have worked their asses off to get where they are, staying respectable along the way. Don't judge too quickly or stereotype.
I don't think that warriors or IMer's are "losers" at all. I am just asking the question what if you went against standard norms of what you are supposed to do in terms of social media and internet marketing...

It seem like most IMer's are only in it for themselves and I have to wonder if we are missing something along the way.

For some, it is a matter of sink or swim, live or die. Unfortunately, that is the way of the world. Ugliness exists in the supermarket, on the roads, everywhere, not just on social websites.

It all has to do with exploiting every possible gateway of getting backlinks and traffic to their websites. Fortunately these media sites have very high PR and respect in the search engines. This is why IM use these sites and try to get the most out of them.
