More Backlinking or More Blog Posts?

Hi all,

I need somebody to point me in the right direction. I've been doing some backlinking to my site as well as my eza articles. I figured if I just did as many backlinking as I possibly can, I'd get to reach my goal of 200 unique visitors per site.

How to get 200 unique visitors per day?

However, I think there is something gravely wrong with my calculations.

I hope someone can guide me in the right direction.

So what i've been doing is post 1 original article per week to my blog. Now I think I have about 7 posts in there. My blog has only been up about a month. But the stats are very discouraging. The number of visitors peaked at 18 unique visitors then plunged to a measly 2 per day.

I figured maybe I've got it backwards. I should put more content in there first before I try to go out and promote my blog. Here's how I got to this thinking:

If I'm aiming for 200 visitors a day, I need to have at least 10 articles on 10 different keywords with searches of at least 30 per day. So if I have 10 keywords, my visitors should be:

10x30=300 searches

However, I overlooked an important factor. The searches for these keywords are shared with other competitors aiming for the same keyword.

So if statistically speaking I should get 300 visitors, in reality, I could only get a fraction of that. Maybe 150. So to achieve my goal instead of 10 keywords, I'll write on 20 keywords to make it easier for me to achieve my goal.

Does this makes more sense?

So at this stage do you think I should continue with my backlinking strategy?
Or should I pause and concentrate on writing more articles on more keywords for my blog?

Any feedback or comment is really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lydia

    Hi,
your blog visitors seem really low - have you been pinging after you post?

I always found that pingoat.com was a good free service to get you a little exposure.

With regard to the niche you're attacking, hows its coverage in Ezine Articles? are you having to compete with thousands of others?

I find that the number of visitors I get through articles is low but on the flip side the call to action has a higher conversion rate (so in my case opting in to a mailing list).
So the quantity is low but the quality is high.

are you getting your visitors to do something or just look around?

    Paul.

I agree with Paul that pinging your blog after you've updated it is a good thing. Another thing you can do is divide your articles and your blog posts into two parts. The first part will be what you will write in your articles. The second part (the follow up) is what you will write on your blog. Then, put your article on one of the High PR article directories (GoArticles or EZA) and then do a major backlink campaign to the article.

Make sure that you write something in your bio box about the follow up or the part 2 being on your blog. If you get high Search Engine placement with your articles, and if you give the readers a reason to want to go to your blog after reading your article, you should get some pretty good traffic to your blog. Good luck.

I thought wordpress automatic pings other website when you make a new post? I am saying this because anytime I make a blogpost, I see technorati bot on my site.

Here are the two primary factors that will determine if you get search traffic or not.

    1. Where does your site rank in Google search results for your targeted keywords?

    2. Is there sufficient traffic for those keywords to produce a steady stream of search visitors?

Ranking in Google search is primarily a function of the quantity and quality of your backlinks. For the best results, this means having incoming links that are anchored on your keywords, in context, on a high PR site. However, don't overlook getting as many links as you can of all types. Almost any link is good.

Now, what if you're #1 in search results for your keyword and there still isn't any traffic? This means that you've selected a keyword combo that simply doesn't get a lot of traffic. Sometimes keyword research tools can be inaccurate and you pick the wrong keywords. The keywords might have been a temporary trend, such as a scandal involving a reality TV show.

The good news is that (a) you can always get more links and, (b) you can retarget your keywords to better ones by changing your titles and the links you're getting.

Don't worry too much about posting frequency. I've got several sites that get over 200 unique search visitors a day that haven't had significant updates in over a year. What you need to be concerned with so far as posting goes is to make sure that you're emphasizing your target keywords in your post title and within the post itself. With a little creativity you can make this work for both SEO and returning readers.

    Hi Lydia,

Not only are the searches "shared" the first 3 search results get most of that search traffic. Writing for more keywords won't necessarily improve your results. Personally I get better results when I focus on a few well researched keywords.

    Hi all,

Thanks for your reply. I just had a look at my stats and nothing. No changes. Sigh! This is really discouraging.

I have a list of pinging sites. As I understand it, Wordpress blog hosted on my own domain will send out pings automatically everytime I make a post to my blog, right? So is there a way for me to check that my blog has been pinged successfully?

As for the keywords, some of my articles or blog posts are between pages 2 and 5. So I'm quite sure I could get them to move up if I do some backlinking to them. I've already done some backlinking to one of my EZA articles but still nada. Maybe I have to wait a few days?

A thought: Could it be because my front page is a static page? Is that why there seems to be no activity in my stats? If it's because of the static page, then I can change it but otherwise I don't know what's wrong.

Just for your info, this is a summary of what I've done to get a constant stream of traffic:

write and submit eza articles (4 are approved)
    social bookmarking my blog
submit blog feed, feedburner feed and eza feed to rss sites
submit articles to other article directory
    submit article to isnare

This is what I plan to do:

sign up and create blog posts for other web 2.0 sites like squidoo and hubpages
create video and submit to video submission sites
    more social bookmarking
    more rss submissions
    more blog posts

So what do you think is the problem? Need some advise badly. Anyone has any thoughts just share them here please. Thanks

    Lydia
