If I want to rank #1 on a search engine for dog biscuits and the only domain name available was dog-biscuits.net is that just as good as dogbiscuits.com? Will the - hurt me and the .net extension?

The seo pros seem to advise that the extension and a dash or 2 has little effect on seo.

Though you will find the top ranked sites are most often .com, no dash names, probably because their better type-in traffic and resale value make these sites a more worthwhile investment of resources needed to get top ranking.

It is certainly still a valuable domain being a .net and having only a hyphen separating the keywords.

Is it AS good as the EMD? No.

Can you still rank it #1? Yes.
