Editing Royalty Free Music

Hey fellow warriors,

I've already done some searches on where to find royalty free music. I've looked around and here is my predicament.

I'm looking to buy one or two songs from someone. Not to use in a flash presentation or anything like that. I want to use the song in a tutorial I am creating for my niche. This tutorial will include an explanation of how to take a 4 minute song and crop it to 30 seconds or less. This explanation is required for the tutorial... as it wouldn't be a very effective tutorial otherwise.

The problem I'm having with most royalty free sites where I can buy is the legal terms. Most sites tell me I cannot rerecord the song... which I understand. I don't want to rerecord the song and mass produce it... My question is would this be considered rerecording the song? I will not market my finished product (the 30 second clip) on my site. In fact since the tutorial will not feature a video version at this time they will not hear the song even. The user will only see screenshots of it loaded into sound editing software.

What do you guys think...? In essence all I will be doing is changing the length of the song.

    It seems to me that if you aren't making the shortened version of the song available and you're only doing this for demonstration purposes, it should be fine. I would think the owners of the song don't want it re-recorded because they don't want people making different versions of it and selling it but that isn't what you're doing.

      I think Jason is probably right, but it might be different if you are charging for the product. I'm not a lawyer, though, so I don't know for sure.

    I don't see any way that you can run into trouble, if you do as exactly what you said. And as jason said as long you aren't making it available there should be no issues.

    If the TOS aren't clear from where you would like to get the music, your best choice would be to ask them, not the people here who have no skin in that game.

      If you aren't sure your use is okay under their TOS, the best way to find out for sure is to ask them. The last thing you want is to end up getting hit with a big bill or getting sued because you followed advice from someone in a forum who hasn't even read the TOS of which you speak.

    Have you tried to find music clips from Warrior GINNY CULP?

    I believe that you can do it with their products.

    Just in case, you can visit the site and check it out for yourself.

    That shouldn't be a problem. Most sites even allows you to modify their products, you just can't resellet them as your own creation.

    What I sometimes do is shorten a royalty-free track to fit in a video. If a video is 3 minutes long and the track I want to use 3:27 I simply chop the last end and do a fade out. I've never thought of this as a problem.

    You could always just grab some free instruments from soundclick.com.
    You can rerecord and edit as you see fit, you just need to give credit to the producer.
    You can even lease tracks for cheap from there.

      I don't see a problem with editing to got a production. Plus you are NOT claiming the new edit to be your own work. I am writing in from Jewelbeat.Com and we have no problem with this. It would be absurd if you couldn't edit a track to fit your production especially if it were the length.

        Just an update, we have over 1000 free tracks and effects and now just released our paid section of $0.99 per track with over 35,000 selection. And as per my earlier post, yes you can edit it to fit your project. Oh the site is Jewelbeat.Com
