Default Any Issue with using the 64 bit version of Vista?

Hey guys. I'm buying a new notebook and was told that Vista only supports up to 3GB's of RAM - you need to go with the 64 bit version to be able to take advantage of more memory than this.

I was hoping to have at least 4GB, but I'm nervous to go with the 64 bit version of Vista as I'm concerned that some programs may not work with it.

Any comments from Vista users would be great.

Thanks all

You should be nervous. Lots of software, even simple apps that don't require installation are not compatible with 64bit.

The versions of vista that have the most problems are 64 bit and also vista ultimate 32 bit.

Really? I thought that there was backward compatibility with 32-bit applications. That's what MSoft says

I run the 64-bit version, and everything works fine except for Google Desktop.

Been running x64 since it came out, no problems at all. It runs the majority of 32bit apps just fine... if you use small apps created for marketing specific tasks I'd recommend e-mailing the developers before switching though, just to make sure.

I'm running the 64 bit version and haven't experienced any problems.

In addition to Google desktop, I've had problems with Acrobat, Quickbooks, and Franklin Covey Plan Plus. I am going to have to upgrade all of them in order to get them to function. MS does have a compatability feature on the Vista website for software and hardware so I knew I would have problems with these.
I can say I miss XP

I run 64 bit vista ultimate and it works fine. The only problem is there is no quicktime or itunes that are 64-bit compatible.

I run 64 bit version of vistag with 4 gigs of ram and windows updates break down my laptop requiring a complete OS reinstall. So I disabled windows updates alltogether on my recent restore of the os and all is fine now.

I read somewhere that Flash doesn't work on 64-bit machines.

Is that true?

Cheers,

Neil

By default, the programs should run in a 32bit mode if it wasn't created for 64bit. It doesn't happen that way in reality. It depends on a lot of things. One being if you are using any 3rd party components in your applications.

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'm best to stick with the 32bit version to avoid risking any problems. The Lenovo rep said that Microsoft was working on making the 32bit OS compatible with more than 3GB RAM, but who knows if that's true or not.
