If you are familiar with Wordpress then build your site with it and use a mobile site plugin like this one : WordPress › WordPress Mobile Pack « WordPress Plugins .

There are also several HTML mobile friendly templates available. Buy any of them and edit it to your requirements with a free or paid HTML editor. Also check the WSO section of this forum. There are several templates on offer there. I saw one on the first page a few minutes back.

no its not.... WAP is old school technology... you dont need to mess around with wml files or decks, etc unless you are targeting very VERY old phones... most modern smartphones and featurephones can easily handle basic html and in some cases html5

I second the opinion for the wordpress plugin. It's very straight forward and out of all of the available plugins for mobile is the most used and recognized. Hope this helps.

There are several Wordpress plugins (many free and some paid) that will do this for you. Some of the results/themes are basic by nature, but you can still tweak them as needed to spice them up.

I use WordPress › MobilePress « WordPress Plugins the most, but if you search the WP plugin database for 'mobile' you will see many free options.

For an HTML site or other type, I have no answers for you. I have tried a few and they all failed miserably or as you mentioned used 3rd party hosting.

question for the people using the wordpress plugin

would you rather the pages be formatted to look like an actual website that looks like your main site? or at least carries the aesthetics or color scheme over from the main site...

from everything i have seen with both joomla and wordpress many of these mobile plugins dont allow you to have "easy" control over the layout or design of your mobile site... and dont actually look like your typical mobile websites... ie home page starting off with brief intro and then your basic menu, i have yet to see a good looking or functional contact page generated by any plugin.

theres a big difference aesthetically between a mobile website and mobile version of your site that looks like a basic list of blog posts... the latter is which i am used to seeing being rendered by these types of plugins...

Also, there will be a GREAT mobile website generator available at MobiLovesMe soon.

You are right. Out of the box these plugins use a simple theme. But, like a regular WP theme, the mobile themes can be edited and tweaked to look more 'like' the original site. Change the colors, add a header/logo..etc.

Out of the box is a 2 minute job, customizing is a litlle longer, but can be worth it in most cases.

This is an interesting topic for me, because a year or 2 ago I was flirting with the idea of making a mobile forum specifically for people who only have mobile phones and no computers. Anybody know how this can be done?

I agree that you shouldn't just use Wordpress plugins to create these mobile sites because they will use tables, scripts, and a whole lot of other unnecessary code that isn't favorable for a mobile website and will only slow down the pages. You are much better off putting a simple site together for yourself so you have a little extra control over the outcome.
