Amazon Selling More Kindle Books than Regular Books Now

Amazon put out a press release this morning that says they're now selling more Kindle books than regular books on the site.

Since April 1, they've been selling 105 Kindle books for every100 regular books. (Number does NOT include free Kindle books but does include regular books that have no Kindle edition.)

In fact, they're selling three times as many Kindle books so far this year than they did to this point last year.

And in the UK, they're selling 2 Kindle books for every hardcover book, even as hardcover sales are growing there.

As someone pointed out in one of my chat groups, once you do the Kindle version it's pretty easy to do a version for the Nook, iPad and whatnot.

I haven't gotten into doing Kindle books yet but maybe I will after reading this. LOL

BTW, the press release itself is interesting because it's a good example of how they're creating news to sell a product--if you read it, you'll see it's obvious they're trying to promote the $114 Kindle.

Probably helps that the Kindle is almost always on the front page of their site.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Yes, that's very true! But I think it also says a lot about the adoption of digital books. Although personally, there are some books I prefer having real copies of.

It's amazing how quickly things are changing. Amazon is also launching a bunch of their own "imprints" to cut the big publishers out of the process:

Amazon on Wednesday announced the launch of its fifth publishing imprint, Thomas & Mercer, a mystery and thriller category that joins Amazon's other imprints, including the newly launched Montlake Romance, AmazonEncore, AmazonCrossing, and The Domino Project. Montlake was launched earlier this month, and with the launch of Thomas & Mercer, Amazon is making it clear that its interest in book publishing is not a passing phase, but a legitimate business venture. The question is: Is Amazon doing it for the right reasons?

Interesting. Of course, BN has been doing this for a while. But still, for online only Amazon to get into the game, it IS interesting. And changes their business model a bit. I wonder how the deal is for the author--dealing with Amazon rather than the big publisher.
