Ok, So I am trying to get started in Internet Marketing. I bought my frist 2 domains this past wednesday using the 1.29 Godaddy coupon. Today around lunch time I get a call from a Godaddy rep. He was trying to persuade me to purchase domain privacy? He was telling me that I didnt want to have my domain public becuase people would track me down through whois and send me email and phone calls. Is this true? Should I have purchased privacy for my domains? Thanks in Advance for advice!

Matt

I've never had any problems when I don't have domain privacy.

My opinion (it's just an opinion) is that this is a clever way of upselling you.

I really don't think it matters unless you are doing something shady and don't want people to know about it!!

I get emails from people who look at my sites through Whois, but most of them are product creators wanting me to promote them.

If you want to keep your footprint smaller (hide your niches), then I would probably go with privacy registration.

If you want privacy protection you should buy 5-6 (cant remember the exact number) domains from GoDaddy, then they give it to you for free for the whole purchase. You can buy cheap .info domains to make up this number if need be, keep that in mind.

Another option is to buy domains from Namecheap. They give you the privacy protection up front for each domain.

If you are just getting started, don't worry about privacy for now. Just start trying to figure out what works for you.

It's true that anyone can access whois and get all the information that is made public. So, yes, IMNSHO there is definitely worth the 10-12 bucks for the peace of mind that you've been proactive in protecting yourself from the cretins and budding sociopaths around the world.

For your first site, I would consider it, just so you do not ruin your good name. It is not necessary, but I do it on any site that I use for SEO purposes.

People can still contact you with privacy, they just do not get your email address.

if you run a whois search, which is free, you can pull some VERY personal details out of website registration.

To see what I am talking about you can:
    1. install Mozilla firefox on your PC for wen browsing
    2. Download and install the SEO Quake plugin for firefox.

This will give you a toolbar that will help in analyzing websites. Look for the Who Is thumbprint. Once you see it, go to any website and click the thumbprint.

You will things about the site owner like name, address, phone, email, etc...

This is why I protect some sites, not all just most.

I also used Namecheap for most of my domain names.

For the few remaining domains that I still have registered thru GoDaddy, none of them have the privacy protection.

ANd I have only gotten 2 emails from solicitors....both wanting to buy my website.

    That's my experience.
