Warriors: Is there a creative way to find out what website (in my city) gets the most traffic?

Ideally, I would like to research and find who gets the most traffic to their website so I can leverage some business opportunties to them.

Much success,

You can check who's using Adwords.. Great way to find opportunity in local areas.

Sites like alexa.com will estimate the level of traffic sites get. But the accuracy is far from perfect as it is based on who as the alexa toolbar installed (or some toolbar or something containing that piece). It's also easy to fake by paying for dirt cheap traffic.

Another way is to survey people in a local area. Name 10 local sites you regularly visit. Ask 100 people. May give you some ideas.

Chris - that is a very interesting problem. And, I've gotta say, that right now - I'm stumped...

No Adwords tells you how many people search for a keyword, and the cost of bidding on such a keyword through adwords.

He want's to know instead which sites get enough traffic.

Ideally he would be looking at the "analytics" for those sites. But since it is secret information those sites won't part with, he wants to know of creative ways to get a feel for the amount of traffic they get.

You could play around with Google Insights for Search and see what people are searching for most in your area, then search those keywords yourself and see which sites appear. They're probably the ones getting most of the search traffic.
