I Got MAD and DELETED all ads from my blogs!

Hi Guys!

Just wanted to share something exciting that happened to me today.

I GOT MAD!

I decided to and actually did delete all ads from my main 4 blogs. Well, not exactly because I got mad, but since they were making my blogs slower.

Once before I had put Adsense ads as well as FB and Twitter Buttons on all pages of my blogs, and found the pageloads agonizingly slow. So today, after I saw 1300+ impressions on one of my FB share stories, I decided to give the buttons another go.

The only way I was going to do that was by removing the ads, and had to part with around $10/month (rising @20%) of Adsense revenue

Funny story: just as I was done removing the ads, one of my readers asks me: WHY DID YOU REMOVE THE ADS!

I was expecting a: GREAT! YOU REMOVED THE ADS!

Well, personally I too find ads useful sometimes, but I find letting my blog grow in terms of readership more important than a few bucks a month!

Please tell me some of you have done such mad things too!

I basically did the same thing a year ago. I got rid of all adsense ads which I had in every post. Got rid of all the various sidebar ads too. I wasn't making much money with them anyway.

Since that time, however, I've put back one adsense sidebar ad and one clickbank banner at the top mainly for experimentation purposes.

Here's something interesting... could just be a coincidence though: My blog was a PR4, then I removed the adsense and it became a PR3... then I put that one adsense sidebar ad back on there and it magically came back to a PR4. Coincidence?

When you are listening to the radio, which is free, are you expecting them to not put ads at all? When you are watching the TV at the national television, are you expecting them to not put ads at all?

It is a very legitimate way to make money. As long as you don't use sneaky technique to make them click the ad, their is nothing wrong with it.

Steve Pavlina wrote a very nice blog post about it: How to Make Money From Your Blog

I improve my blog performance dramatically with W3 Super Cache plugin, and I have facebook, twitter, youtube and RSS button on the side bar.

      Hi Yadira!

I am aware of the Cache related plugins, and use them on all my WP blogs, but these 4 are hosted on blogspot, so unfortunately I had to make a choice

Once they receive over 1000 visitors a day (around 150 right now) I'll migrate them to WP

The $10/month you're making from those ads could easily buy you an account on DreamHost or Hostgator and you could host unlimited domains with much better performance.

This. Honestly Hostgator is fantastic - never had a problem with slow load times, and even if you do, just speak to somebody on the 24/7 support and im sure they will help you out. Seriously, any problems i've had they have been resolved in about 5-10mins.

A worthy investment in your IM Career imho.

          Take care!

BTW, OP, if you were to migrate to another host besides blogspot, that slow-loading problem might improve. Personally, though, and if money is an issue, I would prefer to use a good free host like Awardspace before I would use WP or Blogger or any of those. I think you'll find you have a lot less limitations. Just my opinion, of course.

            Hi Guys!

I really value your opinion and I also have a shared hosting account with hostgator where I have hosted 3 websites and a blog. Still I feel more comfortable with Blogger when posting regularly, maybe cuz I find Google more reliable than Hostgator, maybe cuz WP is a bit more time-consuming than Blogger or something else.. I'll definitely keep an updated db of all my blog posts on my laptop as well as the hostgator account though, in case I decide to migrate early!

If ads are only making you $10 a month you should seek a new way to monetize anyways as that real-estate on your site is worth more than $10 a day. I would never delete my ads as my sites usually make $10 - $50 a day, and I couldn't part with that!

        Hi Jeremy!

I only use Google Adsense on these blogs, with no effort to optimize their size/location/font/color etc.

I only took into consideration what I find non-obtrusive and tolerable in terms of ad size, format and location.

So, maybe the real estate on my sites is worth over $10/month. But I really don't think 150 visitors a day is my goal!

Right now I want to focus on increasing my Social Networks' traffic share, and increasing the total traffic to over 1000 visitors/day.

btw I make enough through trading shares on the Indian stock markets and freelance writing to do whatever I feel like, and I am fortunate to have fairly wealthy parents too!

Online income for me is really only a muse, and not a necessity, and I want to be read more rather than get paid more!

        Regards,

        Samir.

It would seem like if you hosted an ad banner on your own site it would still load as quick as the rest of the page. It does seem like it's taking Adsense ads longer to load these days. I was on a "famous" IMer's blog yesterday and it was so slow I got fed up and left. The funny thing is I went to his blog to find out how to buy an advertising spot on his blog. Needless to say, I talked myself out of it.

Self-hosted ads would probably load a lot faster because there are no additional HTTP requests, and adsense serves ads from third party networks too.

Anyway, only ads load quick enough, it is ads along with other scripts that make the pages take painfully long to load.

I have yet to decide whether or not I put adsense on my blog. for now i'm monetizing with a service and i'm planning on creating my own products. I'm making a FREE video showing how I received 2,800+ visitors in one day with just a few clicks of the mouse! Should be out in the next week or so.

          Cool!

Yours is an IM blog, while mine is more of a muse, which gives me a few bucks anyway!

          Good luck with your products!

The only thing close to that I've done is to limit the amount of ads on a particular page. you have to monitor how much money you're making with certain ads. Sometimes ads aren't worth the performance hit .

Nowadays with the inclusion of 3rd party ads, Adsense too is giving out $10+ CPM ads, so clicks are no longer the only source of real adsense income. In my case, it is the lack of more traffic that led me to remove the ads.

I can still earn Adsense revenue through guest blogging and Adsense Revenue Sharing sites.

Once the traffic rises, who knows!

I don't really like the way adsense ads look, so I avoid putting those up. I do affiliate banners sometimes, though. I try to focus on selling my own thing most of the time.

the way i look at it is, you can always make more money by selling your own products and services than you can selling ad space. the only thing is there are more variables to screw up, which is why a lot of people just sell ad space.

an increase in profit potential almost always means an increase in risk... right?

regardless, generating traffic and converting that traffic into $ is definitely two different skill sets.

        Very true!

But I sell my services through freelancing services rather than my own website, which I would also have to promote to get to #1 to #5 for related searches or pay for ads!

I have created service/product sites for clients though, and would definitely make one for myself some day!
