The Use Of Social Media For B2B (business-to-business)?

Hi all,

During a study trip to Warsaw in march earlier this year, the managers of Exact Software gave us a very interesting presentation about their company and how they are doing business in Poland.

One of their case studies was about Social Media. Unfortunately, we didn't have a lot of time to brainstorm about using Social Media because of lack of time. In particular for business-to-business, since Exact Software sells software solutions to big companies.

Some of our students did suggest using social media, including me. Others were against. The use of fanpages and twitter are useful, however you need to reach the decision makers in the companies that are using or in need of the software solutions.

What do you think of using social media for business to business? In particular facebook and twitter, but of course social media is definitely not limited to those two so other ideas are welcome as well!

Social media is definitely helpful but if my targets are hard core decision makers then I'll go to linkedin rather then twitter of facebook. If I want my words about a business to be heard or spread then other are useful.

Hmm ok. But in that case, how would you use linkedin?

And btw, the goal is not only to reach the decision makers, but to use social media in B2B in general for whatever purpose.

make a network in the niche your business is. It will take time to be accepted in any prominent circle. Linkedin is filled with CEOs and chairpersons and presidents.

Ah that's really interesting, I'm not really into linkedin so I didn't know that was possible. I don't need to get in that network, I just want to suggest them some tips using social media!

Social media is one of the key aspects of Business to Business marketing and forming relationships. Every business 'almost' has a facebook or twitter page. These pages can be used to deliver news on new developments with their software etc. This reaches all it members and their friends because its displayed on their walls like in facebook. So this is a great way to spread the word and perhaps reach other businesses with your product.

Thanks for your feedback. This is basically what I said as well during that brainstorm . However, these managers didn't had a facebook account yet, or were actively using it So it might be harder to form relationships there compared to linkedin... But with those who does, it's definitely helpful!

What kind of test? And local businesses are probably smaller than the companies we're talking about now...

I am huge LinkedIn Member with over 1,500 connections but its not the place to hunt down CEO and Business Owners and pitch them a product or service.

Finding decision makers to sell Social Media or any Internet Marketing strategy is difficult unless you are a agency or branded yourself very well. These business owners will research your company before even thinking of setting a meeting.

Elion, do you have a complete Social Media package to sell?

5300 connections on LinkedIn here... almost all organically built from daily interaction and participation in groups.

For B2B it is the bar-none, defacto place to hit it... although, if you're talking small, localized business, there are other communties out there where you can participate and gain a large presence even in the B2B world. Yelp.com being one... more for professional folks, attorneys, bookkeepers, etc...

Thanks, no I don't sell social media packages. Just want to raise ideas for using social media with b2b.

That's a lot, and basically a good strategy indeed for b2b on linkedin! But do you talk with these people daily in discussion or private messages?

Not daily to all of them. I use LinkedIn to make the initial connection and build the relationship with some initial conversation. In many cases people request a connection but never actually talk, they're just following what I do.

From there, the strategy is content marketing 101... get them into a list... etc...

Just read a very interesting post on the NY Times blog site this morning about -
Should Every Business Invest in Social Media? - NYTimes.com

I found both the post and the comments very informative and sometimes amusing. My overall opinion of businesses trying to use Facebook as a business generator is kind of like my initial exposure to Amway. You go to a social or family function and someone who has never paid attention to you before now saunters up and tries his or her best to start a conversation and move it to why you should attend their next meeting or the insurance salesman who tries to get an appointment with you while you are simply there to have a good time with your friends or relatives - sooner or later he/she begins to be avoided like the plague or never invited to future social gatherings.

  • I think social media is better for b2c than b2b. Reason being, not many decision makers for businesses are on twitter nor do they place value in it.

First of all there's far more to social media than twitter.

Second of all, you'd be really surprised who is an active twitter user... billionaire decisionmakers even. I am personally connected with many top shelf business execs all over the world via Twitter. No, they're not social media mavens and don't necessarily post about their choice of dog food. But they're there.

Did you ever stop to wonder why, with all the media channels and websites at his disposal, Richard Branson chose twitter? As did many others? Something to consider.

Lastly, if you understand B2B (which your comment leads me to believe that you don't), you already know that business purchases are made by committee decisions and groups of stakeholders, who each share some affected area within the business. Only the very smallest of businesses operate with a single decision-maker working on a unilateral basis to approve purchases. Once you get beyond a million or two per year in sales, there's a buying PROCESS that involves multiple parties. Any one of those people can influence the purchase process.

In fact, there's so much gold rush right now for B2B social media, there are entire blogs and magazines dedicated to it. Major marketing automation companies are helping to lead the charge - including Infusionsoft... one of the internet marketing beloved vendors.

No, it's not the usual internet marketing sales page, emotional hot button, pitch-based selling that oozes from ever oriface of internet marketing land. Not a lot of Clickbank and affiliate stuff going on there. But for those who understand the game, it's a far bigger play than anything this forum typically touches.

This is just simply wrong. Especially in the small business world there's plenty of business owners and solopenuers tweeting and making connections with other business owners, as well as consumers. I know because I've found plenty of businesses to work with via Twitter and I know of other business people doing the same thing.

Why do you think things like Tweetups (in person networking meetings with Twitter users) are so popular in many regions of the country? Why do you think there's so many blogs, books, and other publications about B2B social media marketing? Why are so many people positioning themselves as "thought leaders" in their field on Twitter? It's because Twitter can work, if you use it right rather than spamming it to death like many IMers do.
