Do I Need A License? Also copyright stuff....

So I'm opening up a web services business in around two weeks, and I was wondering before I go to calling and meeting with businesses, do I need any licenses or anything? I live in Georgia if that helps.

And with copyrights, how do I put a copyright at the bottom of my site? Can I make one myself, or do I have to register with something?

Thanks for the help.

You can easily add a copyright to the bottom of your webpage (if you are have enough skills to do this)...
and you would need a business license with a tax id.

Go to your city hall to get a business name. Then register your business. It will probably cost you 500 bucks.

Then you will have a real business.....
you might also want to look into getting insurance.

    Good luck!

^ Is there anyway that I can make a sale or two and then register the business, just so I have enough to get the license?

EDIT: Also, is there anyway I can run this without being a business, or registered as one anyway?

You don't need a license if you are doing this through Craigslist... or if you know the person.... or even if you just sell yourself and your skills to whoever.............

It might be harder than you think to do this.

Yeah, I mean all I am doing is providing services, and what do you mean by "harder than you think to do this."?

First of all, be careful accepting advice regarding legal questions from anyone online unless you know they're qualified. Licensing isn't quite a legal issue though it could get sticky (fines) for you if you did need one and don't have it in place.

With that said, if it were me, I'd go under the radar until I had enough business, clients and income to justify getting a license. Ask any bureaucrat in your town if you need one and they'd emphatically say, YES! And he'd probably be right, technically.

But if you give this a try and it doesn't work out you'll have spent money on a business license without having needed to. Remember what I said, taking advice from strangers online can be risky. I've told you how I would approach this. That doesn't mean you should do what I would do. You've gotta decide for yourself. Good luck.

Thanks a ton; I understand what you mean. I think I'll go ahead with it all, and the day I get that first check I'll head down to city hall and set it all up. As you identified beautifully, I'm not trying to sneak by with this, I just don't want to be out $500 before generating any money.

Thanks again, is it all right if I message you in the future for any questions I have?

First, I am not a lawyer; second, don't ask for legal advice on a forum; third, this is not legal advice. Whether you should get a business licence is up to you, and if you need guidance on it, you should consult an attorney or the Small Business Administration.

    https://gtc.dor.ga.gov/

This is usually about a three month process.

YOU CAN DO BUSINESS WHILE YOU ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REGISTERING. You're just waiting on paperwork, and it all washes out in the end because you'll file paperwork on the business you did during the licensing process anyway.

If you are registering as an individual (what the rest of the world calls a sole proprietor), you can use your social security number instead of an ITIN/FEIN and save some time.

You will need to check with county and local authorities and see what your licensing requirements are there, as well.

Most business licences are in the $10-$50 range. You might need as many as three. You might need to pay extra filing fees for specific types of businesses, like LLCs and corporations, which can run into the hundreds of dollars. But it sounds to me like you just need a sole proprietorship.

Again, this is not legal advice, just the voice of experience from someone who's been in business 25 years and licenced that business in five states. The process is just about the same everywhere, and I don't know where that $500 idea came from. I pay $60 a year for state, county, and local licences in Washington state.

(There are states which offer a LIFETIME business licence for something in the $300-$500 range, but you don't have to do that right out of the gate.)

And with copyrights, how do I put a copyright at the bottom of my site?
"Copyright © (years) (your business name), All Rights Reserved."

The (years) are the FIRST year you created the content on the page and the LAST year you altered that content, OR a list of all years content was modified. For a new page, that's "2011" - if you do not modify the page next year, it will STAY "2011" until you change it. If you then change it in 2013, your years can be either "2011-2013" or "2011, 2013" at your discretion.

But if I am just one individual and I am providing paid services, not products, would I need a license for this?

Also, which is better for a domain name and hosting, I would prefer to keep it within one company. Godaddy or HostGator?
