I did some keyword research and was able to find about 10 keywords that are related so I'm going to put it all under one site. My concern on what domain name I should choose. I tried all the keywords and the .com, .net, and .org were all taken but I was able to find [main keyword idea][filler word].net. Would I still be able to get some success out of using this domain name rather than using one of my actual keywords?

You said well: some success. Nothing close to the success you would get without the [filler word].

I've had success with domains with "filler words".

Just choose a filler word with the least characters.

I've also had success adding an "s" to any of the keywords in my phrase.

      .com works best for me...

I think it's okay to go with the filler keyword one. You may not have as much success with that exact keyword, but if you target a bunch of posts for 10 keywords, you should be getting traffic for a lot of other keywords too!

I have a domain name that has [keyword] hq on the end on works fine, it just doesn't go through the rankings as fast as an exact match. As a matter a fact I have beat all the exact match domain names already.

EMD's are just one of many factors in ranking position. It matters, as such, but not hugely in the big scheme of things. Just look at the SERPs for any search you do. Only rarely do you find the EMD in the #1 position. But you often find them sprinkled lower down the Top 10. They're good to have, but other factors (on-page and off-page SEO) can overcome not having the exact match.
