Default I gave away more money today than I spent last Christmas.

When I was coming home from the store today, I saw a van by the side of the road.

The occupants were outside of the van holding a sign saying they needed money to get home.

I stopped and talked to them. They were visiting my hometown and got stranded because they had to repair a broken part (I think it was a fuel pump, could be wrong). They were about 200 miles from home.

I gave them what I had on me. It was well over $100. Not sure of the exact amount.

Last year I would not have been able to help much, if at all.

This year I can help someone without hesitation.

It is a good feeling.

While I want to make more money next year because of what it can do for my family, I also want to do it because of what I can do for others, as well.

Thank you to everyone here for making this forum a place to learn. You guys have no idea how many people you are helping.

The lives of people are being changed. Not just the ones who visit this forum, but the ones who are affected by the ones who come here, too.

Thank you.

That was very generous of you but I have to say that I really hope that they truly needed the money because that is a common scam that people do to get cash.

People will say that the car broke down or they ran out of gas. I had someone ask me for gas money one time. They said they were out of town and a couple hundred miles away from home. A few weeks later I saw the same person in the same spot telling people the same thing.

I'm glad that you are in a position where you can help people but I hope that you helped someone that really needed the money and not some low life scammer.

I had second thoughts about posting this because I didn't want to rain on your parade but I also want people to be careful who they choose to give money too.

Either way, you did a good thing and your heart was certainly in the right place. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.

Just going to chip in my 2 cents here ...

There's a Buddhist saying - "Whenever you act out of greed, you are punished. Not after death, you are punished right then and there, immediately. When you act out of compassion, you are rewarded, not after death, you are rewarded then and there. It is the universal law."

This is something I've found to be true time and time again.

If I'm coming from a place of not having enough and I "take" something from someone, I always feel terrible, whether or not I'm conscious of it.

If I'm coming from a place of having enough and genuinely wishing the best for someone else, I always feel great. I feel warm and compassionate.

If the other person is coming from a place of selfishness, that's not shay's business and shouldn't influence how she feels in the slightest. If Shay's living in a space of compassion and abundance, there's no reason for her to be drawn into a selfish mindspace just because someone else is in it.

Another Buddhist saying ...

"What do you do if someone gives you a present and you don't want it? {They take it home, man response.} That's right ... And your negativity is like a present you're bringing me. I don't take it, so you can take it away with you."

Anyway. My 2 cents.

That's why I said she was generous and her heart is in the right place.

I'm mentioned that I had second thoughts about posting because I did not want to spoil Shay's good feelings for doing a good deed, I'm not trying to be negative but I want to protect others from getting scammed. The whole "I broke down could you give me a couple bucks" is something I've seen numerous times and it's a pretty common scam.

Shay seems like a great person and I am thrilled for her success and impressed by her generosity. I just don't like to see good people being taken advantage of. So again I'll say, I hope the person she helped truly was in need. Either way she did a good thing.

Adam, I knew that someone would post something like this. I can't say I am surprised.

I won't go into all of the details as to why I believed them. There were numerous reasons. That really isn't the point.

My point is that I felt moved to help, and I could.

Had I been inclined to just throw twenty dollar bills in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, it would not have been any different.

The only reason I was able to help others to this extent is because of this forum and the blessing it has been to me.

And for that, I am so thankful.

I debated on whether or not to post this, but this forum is about making money.

Money just for the sake of having money does no good.

Having/Making money for what it can do for your family and for others is the important thing.

Again, I'd like to say that you did a good thing that you are a generous person.

I guess I shouldn't have posted and I debated about whether I should or not I've just seen that scam too many times.

If you had good reason to believe that the person was honest then I am glad that you were able to help.

Shay,

Whether they needed it or not, only you know for sure. The important thing is in doing so, you are blessed and any giving has to be unconditional.

Thanks,

John

Ps I think you this.

Great post Shay!

A good way to keep your wealth, is a willingness to give it away. Not to sound like a "religious loon", but there's a universal law to giving and receiving.

God wants to supply every living person, but he needs our hands to do it. And if he sees that you are willing to share the supplies that you've been given, then he will keep you ever supplied.

Some people call it Karma - some people say it's "the secret" - but whatever - Generosity works! People with generous hearts are always rewarded.

Keep that generous spirit Shay - and you'll have a happy and prosperous new year!

I know you made their day Shay. It's nice there are actually still some wonderful, giving ppl out there. Hard to find, but they're out there. Money is just paper or material when you think about it. There's a lot out there that makes money seem not that valuable.

Don't be defined by someone else's opinion of you.

Adam

I understand what you are saying and I once had a long talk with a pastor about this very topic because it was troubling me a lot. His take was, even if they were scammers, it doesn't matter. If Shay felt moved to give to them, then it was the right thing to do. But your post was important too because we need to have our values tested if they are to have any meaning.

I also think belief in the power of redemption is important.

Maybe, just by giving so freely you can make some people rethink their scamming ways. I know that most scammers think people like Shay are suckers but if, just once in our lives, our goodness can inspire goodness in a person who has taken the wrong road in life, it's a life worth living.

"Les Miserables" is a great example of the knock-on effect of goodness. (listen to the musical version - the book takes about 10 years to read ).

Shay, this post is definitely important for a money-making forum.

Too many people try to make money without knowing exactly why they are doing it. You are a living example of the good that money can do.

Thank you for one of the most important posts of the year.
