Newsletters for a niche forum

Hello all

I have recently opened up a niche forum which is steadily doing good.

What I am wanting to learn now though is something I have seen at a few other forums that as really got me excited.

Newsletters...

I have seen it where members of forums sign up to a monthly newsletter regarding news and updates about the forum and the subject niche and are automatically charged say $5 every month for example.

How do you go about setting something like this up because I don't know what services, software, terms and conditions you might need to run such a campaign.

Could anyone set me off on the right path as it is something I would really like to put into my site.

Thanks

Are you talking about a paid subscription mailing list? Or something else?

Maybe it's just me, but the first thing to comes to mind is "what's in it for me"? Why would I pay for news and updates about the forum (which I presume is free)?

    Help me out here!

First of all, my advice would be DO NOT charge money for your newsletter. You won't be successful doing that. There are too many free alternatives available for people to choose from. A much better approach would be to offer your newsletter for free, and develop a subscriber list you can sell your products to.

Regarding, setting up a newsletter, the easiest way to go is to use a reputable third-party service, which will pretty much handle everything for you for a nominal fee.

People dont want "news and updates" Its so generic.

Just offer them tips on how to do X and X and X specifically related to their interests.

Its not that difficult..a couple of hours and you could have enough for a year...then just fill in content on the site as you go along to complement the automatic newsletter

There are many places where you can set up your mailing list.

MailChimp is alright as long as you are not promoting aff products there.

I agree that charging for a newsletter about news and stuff is not a good idea.

You should be able to mine your forum for a wealth of ideas. That's one of the biggest benefits of creating a group where your niche market congregates.

Before you decide what to offer your subscribers, you need to know what they want:

      1. What are their concerns?
      2. What are their burning questions?
      3. How can you HELP them?
4 What do they need? and
      5. What do they want? (wants and needs aren't always the same thing!)

Once you know what they want to read about, there are several services which can help you set up a newsletter such as Mailchimp, Aweber, Icontact, etc.

      Good luck,
      Merlyn
