VPS Spec for Wordpress Site

Hi folks, my first post here at the WF although I have been reading it for a long time, so hello!

OK I have a new wordpress site I am about to start developing and have decided to use a VPS to host it. The site will never be huge, although it could potentially have quite a lot of visitors.

I'm looking at the basic level 1 VPS from hostgator with the following specs:

0.56Ghz CPU
384Mb RAM
10Gb Disk space (more than enough)
250Gb Bandwidth (plenty for now can upgrade later if a problem)

So my main question is regarding the CPU and RAM spec, is this enough for a resonably small wordpress site?

Thanks for your answers.

Cal.

    First of all, Scratch HostGator.

If you are wanting to get into development, then
you will need a decent work station. I'll be assuming
you are doing all coding through your own work
station unless you plan on using VIM through your
    whole development phase.

The two most valuable 'needs' are bandwidth and
memory. Without these two things, you'll be running
into issues quite quickly. The only bad part is it can
get a bit costly at times. Considering development
takes a while (Could be a few weeks or even months),
you will want to find the most cost-friendly VPS out
    there.

When thinking of development stations, these are
the three hosts that come to mind:
    • YardVPS
    • HostDime
    • PhotonVPS
Although second option may cost a bit more, it would
benefit you greatly. I know for a fact that HostDime offers
24/7 support via Live support & ticket system, so there
is no need in worrying about downtime or anything. If you
have an issue with your VPS, simply contact them and they
usually will respond within the hour. I do not work for HostDime,
I just am a long lasting customer of theirs. They also have
    top notch bandwidth ( I believe it's a 1GB uplink ), so it's
very fast and affordable if you want to add more.

In order for you to be able to run cPanel and WordPress smoothly,
I would highly recommend purchasing a VPS that has 512-768MB
of ram. cPanel itself uses around 128MB of memory I believe, so
it's well worth to spend the extra few dollars if you want to save your
    time.

So, give it some thought. I'd aim for 512MB of ram at the BARE MINIMUM.

    Yours In Success,
    Jake Gray

I would second that about Hostgator. They are fine for shared hosting account that don't consume a lot of resources, but not known for their VPS.

I personally love Arvixe (phplinkdirectory.com is hosted there), and also have hard good things about Hostdime.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

If you want or need cpanel then hostgator does not offer cpanel with their 1st and second VPS offerings, cpanel starts at the third VPS plan.

For your purpose a VPS is overkill if that is the ONLY site you plan to host. Instead I would recommend a reseller account which will give you more than enough resources for your site and includes cpanel.
