Hostgator Problems - Any Recommendations?

I have a VPS with hostgator. It has now gone down 4 times in a 2 week period. No notice from hostgator. No explanation of why it keeps doing this. And they don't do whatever they need to do to bring the server up again until I stumble across the problem and notify them about it.

I can't continue doing business this way... obviously.

Does anyone else have a VPS with hostgator and are running into these problems?

Does anyone have a dedicated server with hostgator. If so, does it run smoothly or do you have these types of problems.

At this point, I'm willing to move away from hostgator if I can find a reliable solution elsewhere. Does anyone know of a reliable hosting company... one that is not a one man show? (I'm one of the people who lost their server when DataWebPro suddenly went out of business).

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi Holly,

I used to have a Reseller Account with HostGator but then
I wanted to get a VPS.

However, HostGator are not specialists in VPS or dedicated
servers - they're more suited to shared hosting really. I think
HostGator only started offering VPS a couple of years ago in
    2009.

I moved from HostGator to a VPS with LiquidWeb and they've
simply been excellent. Their customer service is first class and
they even help out with troubleshooting third-party scripts, etc.

Hi i have a VPS hosting account level 3 with c panel and as of yet its been great.

Have you contacted hosgator with all your problems as a whole and asked them to monitor your website?

They have always been pretty helpful to me.

I have seen some mild issues, but as TheSEguy said they are usually helpful or at least they try to be helpful, I just spent a half day dealing with some issues caused by an auto blogging plugin, that went "rogue" and caused a number of issues, which had to be fixed, to be honest, I really thought about finding a better host, but all in all, for the price, hostgator is not bad, and you can call them, which is something that is really hard to find these days.

But if you do find something more dependable I would be interested in learning about it.

This is interesting topic since I planned to have VPS or dedicated Server.

I used "Hostgator Reseller" since ever started internet marketing back 2004 and never had such experienced with them.

I have a planned to upgrade to VPS or Dedicated Server in very near future, however reading comment in this thread make me think twice.

Let see if others experiencing the same.

Have you had a look to see what the memory usage is like, if it's an issue with your individual VPS, which it sounds like, the most common cause is usually due to your container being out of memory (OOM). Does the downtime coincide with any Cron jobs you've got running?

When it goes down, you could also use your VPS control panel (I think HG use Virtuozzo) to reboot the VPS, and as long as the issue isn't network related it should come back online in a minute or two.

If you are comfortable enough working from the command line, run the following command and see if you have anything in the failcnt column:

    cat /proc/user_beancounters

I had shared Hostgator account for quite some time and was not happy with performance. I since switched to hivelocity.com for my dedicated server. I only pay $100/month for core 2 duo CPU, 4gb RAM, 500GB hard drive and 3TB bandwidth per month - with cpanel/WHM. I think they are a great deal.
