Amazon Marketers - Quick Tip For Choosing Products To Promote

Yesterday I was strolling through Walmart while my wife was shopping and I saw a bunch of products there that I have sites on and selling well.

I know a lot of people say not to build sites on products that people can easily buy at Walmart or Home Depot and that's just wrong.

Here's why..

1. Lots of people including me are just too lazy or just don't like going to Walmart to buy stuff. We'd much rather go to the internet and get reviews and also better prices on the product and get it delivered.

2. Hundreds of thousands of people live in more rural areas and they do the vast majority of their shopping online.

3. Lots of older people would much rather buy online and have items delivered than going out themselves to shop for them. This is especially true for larger items such as washers and dryers, furniture etc.

4. There is a much bigger variety of makes and models to choose from online than at Walmart. If you want to research and find the right product offline it often means you have to drive to 3 or more shops to see what they have. Online (Amazon) all the makes and models are right there with real customer reviews and feedback on each. Time spent researching 2 minutes vs 2 hours offline.

I can go on and on with more reasons but I am sure you get the point. People are buying just about anything online whether you can find the same item at Walmart or not so don't let that deter you from building a site around a specific product.

Another thing to think about..

I just watched a segment on CNBC about Amazon.com and their massive growth. Stock price was only $30 5 years ago vs $192 today.

They were talking about how Amazon is moving heavily into the tablet market and how they want people to keep shopping all the time by marketing to them everywhere they are. Amazon is launching a tablet they say in the next few months and I am sure there will be huge opportunities for us marketers in the app world because people will be buying hundreds of millions of dollars worth of stuff from their tablets on Amazon in the coming years.

The street is now talking about Amazon actually becoming the next Walmart in the next decade and I can certainly believe it. I believe we are in a great spot right now as Amazon affiliates so let's get creative and capitalize.

Cheers,

Jan

  • Just an interesting side-note: If you check out Wal-Mart online, they have 25x as many products as what their actual stores carry in stock, and these can be delivered free of charge to the customer's local store.

Yup and they have an aff program as well.

Haven't tested that yet and it'll be interesting to see conversions. Samegoes for Overstock.

Walmart's affiliate program is administered through Linkshare, not directly. And I think Overstock is through CJ.

I had a hard time getting approved for overstock through cj.com

They denied me twice and then I sent them a screenshot of my Amazon sales which got me approved. I haven't added their links to my sites yet so no feedback on their conversions yet.

If Amazon bails out of California, I'm all set to move everything over to Walmart.

Walmart does have decent conversions, but I do prefer Amazon.

I have a sneaky suspicion Amazon would rather pay taxes here in CA than losing all of the affiliates here which brings them a ton of money every month.

We'll have to wait and see though.

I have a solution to this problem that's launching in a month.

Jan Roos, I know we've had disagreements in the past but please contact me and I'll make it worth your while.

How would you like it if you knew exactly what keywords Walmart.com is ranking for? :p

All of those great reasons that people prefer to buy online posted by jan roos has me questioning the demographics change.

I know that the women in my life would never buy online if they can get out of the house and simply "go looking" which equates to nothing less than $100 each visit.

I on the other hand, won't step foot in these stores if there isn't a Home Depot or Lowe's next door.

Should our marketing be oriented towards males, seniors, and ???

I'd far rather buy online most of the time, but then I've never fallen into the female shopping stereotype. It mostly comes down to the selection, as mentioned in the original post. I like knowing my options without running all over town.

Unless it is clothes and video games I like to do all of my shopping online. I do use Walmart.com from time to time because they have an option on some items now where you can buy it and pick it up in stores same day, but otherwise I use Amazon.

The only reason I don't buy video games online is because I enjoy looking through used games at my local game store. In fact, in my experience more women buy online than men simply because most men I know do not like taking the time to shop and would rather let their wives do it.

    Great post Jan!

I know I always do that with every book I browse at Barnes and Noble or Borders. 95% of the time, I end up getting it much cheaper on Amazon. It's no surprise why the traditional brick and mortar bookstores are in trouble!

I read a recent report that the growing trend is for shoppers to go to brick and mortar stores for the initial research, but then ultimately going online to finalize their purchase. This makes sense as they end up often finding much better deals online. And here's the kicker...Amazon is right there at the top of the list of preferred consumer online sites.

So as Amazon affiliates, this is a great time to be involved.....And it only gets better!

I do the great majority of my Christmas shopping on Amazon (and yeah, I'm a woman!) I love the whole "get out of the house to shop" thing. But at the holidays, that makes me absolutely nuts. So I stay out of the stores and see the shipping as a small price to pay (unless it's Super Saver Free Shipping!).

Plus, I and many others who need specialty diet foods (gluten free, for example) buy online on a regular if not at least weekly basis. While I'm on, I often remember something else I wanted but don't want to skulk around the stores for.

I'm not old and I'm a woman. You should be marketing to me

This happens all the time and that is precisely why that 24-hour Amazon cookie is such a big component to success. Just get your visitors to click on your links and then the magic starts!

Great post. I was actually trying to find out what products available on amazon weren't sold in stores lol

Your points make sense though, and pretty much all the sales I've made on amazon are on products that are available in many different B&M stores.

Why not ? i guess there is always or nearly always a money back guarentee anyway with those stores, would suck if you buy a expensive jewel that you end up not liking ..

Im sure this niche is highly competitive though.

I bought my current car, sight unseen online. I knew exactly what I wanted and shopped it throughout many, many Toyota dealers in Southern California, but their prices were too high.

I found it $10,000 less with a dealership in Dallas and bought it. My husband flew out to Dallas to pick it up for me.

The funny twist is, we then ended up moving to NE Texas and ended up bringit all the way back again

Hey on a related note. What do you recommend for a wordpress theme for an amazon review site? Any suggestions? I plan on writing some detailed reviews and also some informational articles related to the niche.

It's true that the most popular items sell the best because Amazon converts well and the vast majority of people like them. The trick is to send volumes of targeted traffic to overcome the very low commission rate.
