Yet another newbie - please evaluate my strategy

Im new here.

Hello, I stumbled upon this site looking for some others to network with on ideas related to affiliate marketing or internet marketing in general. I already found a post where some local Texans like myself are meeting. I am a software developer, so the technical stuff is the easy part.

My strategy:
- Identify some products that I am familiar with
- Hit the google keyword tool to verify people are searching for those products
- Use a search tool (web ceo etc) to find similar keywords that will bring search engine traffic to my site
- Write reviews and articles with those keywords in the title and headings
- Build backlinks to articles, promotion etc, tell the world.

I think that out of all the steps I am most unsure about, is the part about building back links, getting 1st page SERP.

You seem to have a good bead on the typical "wash, rinse, repeat" strategy for IM but truth is, there are a million failures for every one that gets it right.

The fact you are starting with "Identify some products that I am familiar with" is fantastic and the perfect way to go. Familiarity is the key to building a solid website that people will want to frequent.

After that, it's all about building solid, original content to keep your visitors interested. There are no shortcuts but after a while you'll begin to see what works and what doesn't work.

Trial and error is essential for any business model. Forget the "wash, rinse, repeat" all the gurus preach and learn to develop your own skills unique to your business model. Yeah, it sounds simple falling from my lips to your ears but thruth is that nothing worth it's salt doesn't take effort.

The key principle here is to always keep learning from your mistakes. We all fail from time to time, nothing is guaranteed but the more time you throw your ideas against the wall, the more you will learn what sticks.

Also, two thing all novice IM's should know is that providing competent customer service and treating your customers like gold will build success.

A good vantage point is to try learning how to sell on eBay. If you can cut your teeth there, you can handle most anything.

Your strategy is common and it can work. What exactly are you unsure about concerning building backlinks and getting on Google?

Iv'e been doing a bit of research over the past few months on IM topics, including the task of building backlinks. The things Im uncertain of so far are

      (1) how can one expect to rank higher than the actual vendor who has that product listed on their website, for the keywords in your links
      (2) article writing seems to be the preferred way of building back links, along with social media etc
      (3) if I write articles around topics related to the keywords I want to rank on, how do i keep the article content different from the content that the links point to (links from the article)?
      (4) something bothers me about using my full name and photo on the articles I write, as is the case with many articles I see have them. im not sure if I want my full name and photo plastered all over the net...

As for (1) - Maybe its just a matter of the keyword(s)/phrases that I choose, which will allow me get the ranking at some point?

You can use a Pen Name with article directories and on your website.

As far as backlinks go, this is probably the most difficult part for getting your site to rank well in the SERPs.

Depending on the keywords you choose, you can potentially be up against sites in the top 10 that have billions of backlinks. A lot of people will recommend outsourcing to backlinking services. I haven't used any myself, so I cannot comment on them.

If you plan to go with article directory submitting, I can suggest one strategy that may help you.

        Main Website
        |
        Links to
        |
        Article 1
        |
        Links to
        |
        Article 2
        |
        Links to
        |
        Article 3

If allowed two links, link one to the main website as well. Link the submitted articles to the next published article on your site (not the one you submitted to the directories). This will help build multi-level backlinks to your site. They also count as 'domain backlinks'. This also allows you to target multiple key phrases.

Don't worry about viewers seeing duplicate content from the directory and to your site. Each article on the directory is an entry page to your site so once you get a decent amount of articles, it's unlikely they'll see the duplicate content anyway.

Hope that made sense. Good Luck.

Also, google search for Ed Dales Challenge and search for Market Samurai. MS program is a really good tool for keyword research and shows you a lot of valuable information. They have tutorials on how to use the software and it has a 30+ day free trial.

That strategy is well planned out, but the truth is, you should be persistent with this. There is a big learning curve on keyword research and pre-selling.

It may not be as simple as it sounds, but you're not in the wrong path.

I used article marketing when I was starting and the results were decent. The only difference between what I used to do and what you're planning to do is that I wouldn't send people to the offers, but to a squeeze page to capture leads.

If you build an email list you will have time to monetize your subscribers and it will make you a lot more money in the long run.
