  I know that someone already mentioned this, but I have used both Copyscrape (free version) and just doing a plain old Google search with the text in question. I have some decent experience with plagiarism as I am a professional teacher (though currently not teaching) and have caught many cheaters using Google alone.
  
  Though I know it is not always applicable in online marketing, it helps if you know or have at least spoken to the writer whose text is in question. Why do I say that? Well, you can get a good idea of how they write, typical word choice, if they punctuate well, etc. just from their everyday speech and even email writing patterns. I have caught plenty of cheaters this way. ex: If you usually see lots of misspellings, and grammar errors and then get a 'perfect' piece from them, that could be a flag for you to check on the originality of the piece. Another example would be use of a more advanced vocabulary than they typically have used. Now mind you, this is more helpful with increased contact with a person. Also, there are people whose everyday writing, etc. is not careful spelling/grammar-wise, but who employ spell check, proofread or use a proofreader for more important things. No plagiarism check is foolproof, so all you can do is the best you can do.

I personally use Copyscape, I think the price is affordable and in my experience I've seen it pick up more results than other services (though I've never used the one mentioned above so can't comment on that).

Keep in mind that Google deals in its own way with Plagiarism by giving priority to the first article/page they found online. I use either Google to look for copied text and also Copyscape occasionally.

If you buy a lot of articles, you're best bet is to pay for Copyscape Premium.

My everyday speech is nothing like my written.

My written word is typically much more formal.

This isn't true. You'll find lots of examples right here on the forum of people complaining that they got out-ranked with their own articles. I'm sure everyone would agree that's how it should be, but unfortunately it isn't.

Bernard, is this confirmed?

I was under the impression that the time line was specifically NOT the criteria that Google uses when finding and ranking several instances of the same article.

Copyscape is a good option, however if you want to do it for free then you can search for few random sentence of your articles in quotes in Google.

I wouldn't worry about it too much... People are always concerned about this kind of thing so they want me to give them "secret-sauce" tricks for making sure their copy was stolen...

The truth is, if you write good Copy, your stuff is sometimes going to get para-phrased and plagiarized, that's the price of doin business on the internet.

Just know that, as long as you're offerin a TON of genuine value with your copy, your going to consistently WIN, whereas they will never learn how to acually write good copy. That's just how it is.

So, don't worry about it.

Just choose a reputable article writer or source to begin with. After publishing the article try to search for it using the targeted keywords. If it turns up in the supplementary index, ask for a explanation, refund and/or leave feedback. Stick with good writers.
