Yesterday i checked my backlinks to one of my websites and i had 238 backlinks showing. Earlier on today i waent to check my backlinks again (because i was bored? and yahoo site exsplorer was down due to them doing some maintenance of some kind.

Anyway i checked later on and yahoo site exsplorer then showed my website had just 119 backlinks. I though this was odd, surley i can lose over a hundred backilnks within a couple of hours?

Is this yahoo hidding this from us?..

Anyone else discovered this problem?

Yahoo site explorer is not accurate and who knows how often their data is updated. Look into MajesticSEO.com for the best backlink data.

Well, I do not believe in yahoo siteexplorer. It even shows links between my own website pages as backlinks to them. Don't know why!

You have to choose to exclude links from your own domain.

You migth have used the www version in one of your searches, and the non-www version in the next atempt.

Check your backlinks selecting "Entire site" and exclude backlinks from your own domain (allthough those will also help you rank).

If this is what you did, make a 301 redirect to the www or non-www version indexed in Google.

Because backlinks count for specific pages, not sites in toto.

Every inner page that links back to the home page counts as a backlink for the home page. When you enter just the domain, the backlinks shown are for the home page.

Munch has given you the formula for finding the approximate number of external backlinks that YSE is counting at the time of the inquiry.

Yahoo does this all the time and you should never assume that yahoo reports every single link built to your site.

Another thing you will notice is that if you track your competitors links (as you should if you're serious about ranking top#10) you will see that their link count has come down as well. So its not like JUST you specifically have "lost" links... Yahoo is just not SHOWING as many of your links, OR your competitors for that fact.
