It depends on a variety of things. What is the website about? What is it used for? Is it selling a product? Recommending a product? Building a list? Building a blog?

To start off, I would use Google AdWords. Start off slowly and TEST different elements of your page to improve your conversion rate (assuming you're selling something or trying to get opt-ins.)

It's difficult to say without more information about what your website is about.

    It depend on your wish:
    Research
If you want fast traffic: buy Adwords or Facebook ads with some coupon, this will saves some money.
Targeted traffic by Search Engine: you need building link
    1. Submit to bookmarking site, you can submit to high PR bookmarking site as digg, stumbleupon, delicious, reddit. The other site will have less value.
    2. Make some articles and submit it to article directories
    3. Build link by high PR forum profile
    4. Blog comment
Do no.2,3 and 4 frequently and see the increase of ranking, it takes months to see it.

Why do so many people imagine that that's a good way of attracting traffic?!

When a potential customer finds one of your articles by putting one of its keywords into a search engine as his search terms, do you want him coming straight to your site, or do you want instead to send him to an article directory (where you lose most of the traffic, just like anyone else does)?
Why not put the articles on your own site instead?!

And get both the traffic and the primary SEO benefits for your site instead of for someone else's?

And then after that, when it's been published and indexed on your own site, submit the same article to as many article directories as you like, with a link to your site's landing-page (not to the original copy of the same article, of course), to see if there's any additional SEO benefit from that, too (which there can be, though it's very tiny because article directory backlinks are only non-context-relevant, PR-0 backlinks).

I agree with Alexa. While articles directories can help with link juice, it's much more important to start building the content on your own site. Fill that sucker up with as many keyword-targeted pages as possible and update regularly.

Making sure you've initially picked the correct keywords is an absolute must and so many people still make the mistake of not checking the competition using various different keyword tools. Your aim should always be in finding the correct niche related keywords with low competition and a decent amount of monthly searches and build you campaign from there. You could expect your site or blog to be in a prominent position on page one of Google after three months if you get the initial part of the IM jigsaw correct.

In my view of the all above are good strategies for building traffic-but the question is how much perseverance is required? This is so because some of these approaches take ages before one gets to see the results

I'll give you 3 easy steps:

    1. Know your market well, demographic, age, etc.

    2. Find out where they hang out (Forum, Facebook, even Offline!)

    3. Go there, create massive value and they will come to you

There you go, targeted traffic in 3 steps!

    Hi,

I agree with Andrew, if you want targeted traffic you need to know your market inside out! Use sites like alexa, quantcast and compete to check on demographics. Keywordspy has some very useful tools to check on your competitions kws etc.

Again as Andrew mentions, where are you target market hanging out, are there facebook groups are there forums dedicated to that market (my guess is yes!) become active in these forums......

Other traffic methods you can utilise are PPC, media buying, banner advertising etc, but it depends on your budgets! Be careful if you use these methods as you cam lose a lot of money!

I'm testing PPC for a new site I have up at the moment and the CPC is low and it generates very targeted traffic!

Article marketing is also workoing well for me with the niche i'm in, i submit an article a day and also update the blog daily, with posts and videos.

Video and youtube is another great traffic generator!

Remember all this takes time, but stick at it, work out a strategy and STICK TO IT!

    Over and out!!

I would say go with adding articles to your own blog.

This will tell Google that you're adding fresh content. You'll still have the opportunity to article market and get those backlinks, just not with the big directories. But that won't matter since you'll be getting traffic to your own blog via strong keywords.

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

This question is far too vague to answer.

The answer would depend upon a variety of factors including the niche, type of website, how often you're updating the site etc... You've told us none of this information...

For example, I've built and sold a bunch of sites in the football (soccer) niche. Youtube generated a massive amount of traffic to the site fast... This was just by ripping a few goals and uploading them with new tags.

In the IM niche this is a far less effective method... Yes it still works, but you'll need videos that are more unique and time consuming to create... Giveaways etc are probably more effective in this niche.

  • All the above plans are good, but I will once again try and pimp the Video Marketing + Social Media strategy. Not only does it get traffic, but its a HUGE branding tactic (depending on your niche of course) but if you can both educate and entertain your target audience at the same time.

I'll admit to doing some Article Marketing and PPC and other stuff, but think about it - it takes 2-3 minutes a day just to do a video. It's just a powerful supplement (yes, just a supplement) to your marketing with such little effort. And no, you dont need to be an Oscar nominee to get your videos viral across social media as long as you're providing great content (like the usual catch phrase that echoes along these forums - content is king).

The first thing to ensure is that you've found your keyword niche.
Then add good content to your site with these keywords.
Don't over-saturate your content with keywords, just make sure it appears in the title, meta description and between 2 to 4 times in the body of your content.
Add new content to your site at least 2-3 times a month.
Then you want to build your backlinks from good reputable sources - forums, blogs, article directories, web 2.0 sites, social networks are all worth going for.
Don't go crazy with SEO submission applications like SENuke, SE Robot, etc... that just blast your links to hundreds of sites a day. The ramification of that can be disasterous on your site.
Do it slowly and steadily and you'll start seeing genuine traffic to your site.

Create many Squidoo lenses for free, and sell other stuff at your lenses, besides promoting your site:

    http://www.squidoo.com/passive-income-website-traffic-squidoo-beginners-guide

Write at least one article per day and post it to a paid Wordpress blog with all the plug-ins you can have. You get a lot of traffic this way.

Submit the same article to Ezinearticles.com and to websites related to your topic that accept submissions from members. They are much better than article directories. You get traffic and a better ranking.
