Authority Site with Microniche sites feeding it?

Hi, I'm a beginner to internet marketing and would appreciate any advice. I would like to build an authority site in a very competitive market. I am also considering creating 1 or 2 separate sites out of microniches within my larger authority site niche.

As an example, say I build an authority site in the large niche gardening. If you're going to do this, does it hurt or help if you build a smaller site in say, vegetable gardening? Or would I be better off keeping everything on one site?

Couldn't you "feed" your authority site from your smaller sites, or is that against Google's rules? And would I be able to link between my own separate sites without being penalized, for instance, on my gardening authority site have a link pointing to my vegetable gardening site, and vice versa?

I highly recommend you pick a niche that isn't very competitive just starting out. However it's not impossible for you to succeed in one. Just make sure you do a very detailed keyword research. Best of luck to you.

i'm not sure what you mean by "feeding" a site with mini sites

however if you want to build an authority site in a competitive niche you should be asking questions like

1. how do I make content better than any other site in the world on this topic

2. how do I promote this awesome content better than any other site is doing

otherwise you will never have an "authority site" without those 2 things imho.

If you can do it right this can be a very good model. The thing is you should have very good content on the auth site and on the other ones.

If I would go with this business model I would make my authority site a mix of free information and paid content under a monthly subscription.

Well, "feeding" was probably just fancifying it, I think all I meant was would I have a better chance of finding traffic through a smaller site, then putting a link on that site to the authority site, perhaps as an upsell (is that the word?)

Everything I've read has hammered into my head that I need to focus on smaller niches, but I feel I could offer something that would be of value and is different to my chosen larger niche. You are probably right zeppb, and I should focus on a smaller market for the time being while learning. I'd still like to pursue my authority site in the competitive market eventually, but I have to say the keyword research is driving me a little nuts. I am following the thirtydaychallenge from Ed Dale but I just can't the hang of interpreting Google first page SEO Firefox results for competition. What should you think if there are minimal page backlinks but an enormous amount of total domain backlinks?

Digitalproductreporter, I would love to have answers to those two questions, I have some ideas, but, at this point they're just ideas : )

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking!

I have to figure out how to implement the monthly subscription once I get to that point; I was thinking of maybe using Paypal's monthly payment feature. Or can anyone recommend a good program or software for this?

How about this? Break your niche into several micro-niches. (Main keyword phrase and sub phrases) Build your authority site, but put most of your work on your micro-niche sites. SEO those micro-niches sites until they rank in the top 10 (hopefully the top 3). Make sure each of those micro-niche sites makes money. Link back from those micro-niche sites to your authority site. As the micro-niche sites grown in page rank, etc, those links will be more valuable for your authority site. Over time, your authority site will start to rank for its more competitive keyword phrases.

The only other thing I would suggest is that you need to be thinking in terms of 30 or 40 micro-niche sites. I don't think 1 or 2 is going to do much.
