I think you are asking the wrong question, because it doesn't matter how much traffic you sent, but what matters is how targetted it is and how much the conversion rate is

so you could send 10000 (untarggetted) people but if the conversion rate is only 1% and you send 100 (targgetted) and the conversion rate is 2% then basically the last one is better

Yea thats a great point, it would be useless seeing 1,000s of people interested in cookery come to your site if your selling an ebook about dog training.

1 million unique a day would be a dream lol.

Well it all depends on how good your site is as you could have millions flock to you and still see no results.

I guess the more the merrier.

    Hmm.. thanks.

    Then what about this?
I usually see the traffic through awstats in my hosting but then when when I check with google analytics there is a difference in the number of the traffic coming in.

    Any idea what caused this?

The rule of thumb is that some of the users will convert (will generate sales). The average percentage is somewhere between 0.5% and 2.5%. It gets higher if the users are highly targeted. So you do the math now. For 0.55 conversion, in order to generate a sale per day, you would need 200 unique users. But there are also other things to consider, like the price of your product, whether it has some recurrent options too (subscriptions), etc. But from the top of your head, you can start your math with those percentages.

P.S. Some tools can increase conversion up to 10-12%, but those are usually quite expensive

I think targeted search engine traffic is what matters most Right now I don't have much but I aim to get more targeted traffic through search engines. I really liked what zebix said about the conversion rate .

depends what you are also promoting, for example I have an ecommerce store that targets specific products and I do not need a lot of visitors a day say only 25 a day I get and converts at 4% so that is one sale. But this one sale brings in good money

If you are looking at info products work it out as follows:

create a formula to define how much money you want to make
pick an average conversion rate of 1-2%,
know what your margin for your product is
think how much you want to earn from your website in $

now you have the variables to define how much traffic you need to land on your site.

Just remember if you choose use the Google keyword tool, ensure you measure exact traffic, and also know that you will only receive about 40% of the exact match traffic if you are number 1 on the SERPS.

A good way to test is to use adwords and pay for traffic.

    Cheers

The amount of traffic doesn't really matter. In fact you can buy junk traffic from lots of sites offering such services. You need:

    1. Targeted traffic - People who come to your site and get what they EXACTLY want.
    2. Conversion Rate - Depends on your sales pictch / content & how targeted your traffic is.

    I have a few sites that gets only 110 - 150 visitors a month and still make around 10 - 12 sales.

Depends on the quality of the visitors .

The more the better ofcourse. If you get a very high bounce rate (how many people directly leave your page when they came on it) it's also not very good, because people don't look at your site.

But: if you promote a $1000 product with like 2 buys a month with low traffic or you have a $10 product with 100 buys a month from high traffic, than the first one is better ofcourse. It depends on how much you make from it

    Good Luck!

Step #1: Use the SEARCH feature at the top of this
    forum for more DETAILED answers.

Step #2: Traffic LARGELY depends on your business
    model. For example -

I've done services generating no more than a couple
    hundred people and made thousands.

For that business, all it took was one or two sales.

If you're google, you would want as MANY people as
possible visiting your website because in their case
    more is GOOD.

    Step #3: See steps #1 and #2 ;-)

Ideal traffic probably depends on the product your selling. Rather it's physical products or info such as e-books.
