I read an article not long ago that talked about how the average cost of a millionaires house is $300k and on average their cars run $50k. ((just averages))

The problem today is most people who flaunt wealth are not wealthy. They are simply trying to keep up with the Joneses.

So true. But this guy obviously doesn't want to stay under the radar if he's on the Joan Rivers show buying diamonds and giving out very large membership numbers. He's out there promoting himself and his website. If his website was making THAT much money he would most likely be the kind of person who makes sure Forbes hears about him if they haven't already.

The point, however, is that this is a DATING WEBSITE supposedly doing $1 BILLION per year, not a rock exporter.

Whether your choose it or not, you will be in the media. Think Zuckerberg was a social butterfly? Hardly. And they made a movie about him.

You may be able to stay under the radar with exporting rocks, but a dating site pulling in $1 billion? No chance at all. Like I said, even the staff would be leaking info all over the place. There would be endless lawsuits about this or that with people desperate to get a piece of that action. $1 billion PER YEAR will make people crazy.

First - read the transcript folks - at no point does HE say he has 2 million members EACH paying $40/month. He never says how many PAYING customers he has - all we have is Joan Rivers jumping to that conclusion - and he doesnt correct her either.

Neither does he say how long his paying members stick around. So I agree that 80 mil a month is a stretch BUT he's obviously making something.

Next, as Dan and Fernando and others have pointed out - most millionaires in this country (US) don't stand out. I recommend you read Thomas Stanley's book The Millionaire Next Door. If you think millionaires live in estates, drive a Rolls, and wear expensive clothes this book will be an eye opener. Now some millionaires do that - most in this country don't.

Having worked in a bank in western NC - a big retirement community - it was always shocking to see the folks who would come in at the first of the month to check on their pensions, SS checks, etc. You'd think they were living check to check - but they'd have hundreds of thousands of dollars in various accounts. When I would chit chat with them about why they would physically come in to see about an electronic deposit almost to a person they'd tell me they either didn't trust the bank or the government and wanted to catch any issues ASAP. (this was in the mid 80's before that thing called the Internet caught on ;-) )

You are quite right. One of my mentors is a millionaire.

He is here in Australia, and him and his wife are the most down to earth people you will meet. They do not dress up fancy and drive expensive cars.

When I asked them why, He said, you dont have to spend money to enjoy life. Plus I do not want to collect sheeeet! LOL that was a classic about they way these guys think.

it just goes to show you that people with alot of money think differently. That is probably why and how they got there in the first place.

He didn't earn $80mil a month, he generated $80 mil a month in revenue...if what he said is accurate.

According to Groupon's documents related to their IPO, they did $713 million in revenue last year (roughly $59.4 mil a month) and lost $413 mil.

There's huge difference between revenue and earnings when you have a business like that.

Agreed. However, dating sites can do quite well. A week ago read an article about a woman who started an overseas or expat dating site. She was shocked that she got about 200 people signing up. Then her problem was spam, which she eliminated by charging a small fee for membership. And now she's got a viable biz that's growing daily. Can't remember how much she makes, but it wasn't bad money...

Dude, if you watched the show you would see that he as well as other Beverly Hills millionaires were grabbed while out shopping. Assuming they are not staged, he was not setting out to promote himself to the wider world.
