What counts as a 'Like'?

I'm doing some tests on the link between social indicators and SEO. But what actually counts as a 'like' on Facebook?

Does it have to be a 'like' button on a website that someone clicks, or what if someone just posts the link as a Facebook update from within Facebook?

It would make sense to me, that if someone posted a link as an update it should figure to a search engine that that link is quality information worth sharing.

Anyone, any idea?

A facebook "Like" is simply anyone who has clicked on the Facebook "Like" button. No more, no less.

"Like" in facebook used to be "Become a fan". It is a way of connecting with people, topics and things you care about. It is also a way to give positive feedback.

A like is just a "LIKE" on Facebook.... if you have it in your website then it counts as a visitor to your website as well as fan to your Facebook page.

      Hi MonopolyMan,

Surely if your tests are worth doing, the answer to this question would be the first thing that you would properly test in order to provide real, empirical proof?

Even 1000 answers on a forum prove nothing to someone who is testing in any meaningful way.

I think he's trying to figure out what a "like" is so that he can properly test what it's effects are on the SEO process. Because clearly the top search engines are adding this to their algorithms in a big way.

Each website has a special code that is needed to properly be counted as a like for that website. You can get the code for any website here...

        Good luck with your testing.

          Hi garyv,

I'm not sure if your answer was in response to my post?

I think he's trying to figure out what a "like" is so that he can properly test what it's effects are on the SEO process.
I'm suggesting that he figures that out by testing because if he doesn't, his later tests may well be invalid.
