Growing pains...webhost deactivated my hosting

I got word yesterday that my web hosting account was deactivated because.. well... I'm too awesome.

My site was crashing earlier in the week due to too much traffic, and then they deactivated it and said it was causing "mysql hammering" and was causing performance issues for users on the same server.

So, in a mad rush, I've had to quickly buy a VPS and begin the migration to a new server.. I've never used a VPS before, so this is all new to me. I didn't think I'd need to upgrade so soon, but I guess that's how it goes when you kick ass!

It's quite a huge jump in expenses though, from $4.99 a month up to $150 a month is quite the growing pain indeed.

So a word of advice to you all... When your server starts crashing from too much traffic, don't think "it will pass"... start looking into what you're going to need very shortly and be a bit more prepared for it than I was.

Because I thought it would just blow over, I ended up with about 4-5 days of downtime as the VPS is set up and the site is transferred over as well as the domain and DNS..

This not only took down the site causing the problem with all the traffic, but all of the other sites hosted on my account as well, which is somewhere around 25 or so... So this caused me quite a stressful day yesterday, hopefully when this happens to you you will be more prepared.

Thankfully there's beer.

If you don't mind me asking, how many hits per day are you getting? And type of site? I mean, what type of software / features are on it causing such a load?

Sorry to hear that man. Seems like you know how to get traffic though so hopefully it will all come back. Keep up the good work.

Are you sure you moved to a VPS? VPS for $150 per month?

Have you tried caching of your files so you are not constantly querying mysql?

Shared hosting is not designed for heavy traffic sites and shared hosting providers will suspend accounts that are use excessive cpu/memory and causing all other sites on the server to slow down or stop responding.

I got 9158 unique visitors the day before they deactivated.

I've been steadily climbing traffic levels for months now.

It was a shared hosting account that it was on, and yeah, I paid for a VPS with Cpanel licensed and installed for me.

The support team is assisting with the transfer and setup of the VPS for me because I don't know anything about VPS.

I've been getting 2,000-4,000 per day with a news site on shared hosting but use a cache program to lessen server load. No problems so far.

Thanks for posting this. So many people think shared hosting can't sustain traffic. Not true at all, as your sites show.

I have sites using 20 gigs/month in bandwidth and they're on shared hosting, too, with no problems. It's not the amount of traffic that matters, it's the amount of server resources used.

$150 is crazy for a VPS. You could get a dedicated server for less than that. Which hosting company are you with?
