Amazon Products - Help

18 replies
Hi Warriors,

I've been wanting to build a review site for Amazon products in some time now, and have looked for products to promote in a couple of days.

But when I find a product, how do I check the competition?

So for example how would you check the competition for this product, after you've found some keywords for it?(It's not an affiliate link)

Amazon.com: Weber 386002 Q 100 Portable Propane...Amazon.com: Weber 386002 Q 100 Portable Propane...
I've head that Google's keyword tool is bad for checking competition, is that true?

    Google's keyword tool is good for checking search volume (demand) but not for competition. I usually just use SEO for Firefox and do a manual Google search for the keywords, then take a look at the strength of the top 10 ranking pages (PR, links to domain, links to page and sometimes age). That's really all you need to look at.

    Looks like it's 3.5.1. It stopped working for a while, due to Google changing stuff aroudn or whatever, but it's been working well since the last update. You can always try SEO Quake though as it gives you the same metrics.

      One free tool that might be useful to you is Traffic Travis. I've used it in the past to check the competition for Amazon sites.

    Great tools listed, but the competition depends on which exact keyword you're targeting. Load up that keyword into the tools or google.com and have a look through the first 3 results. Check how many backlinks they have, how old they are and figure out if you can beat them. (If it's not a really well established site, odds are you can beat them).

    Then give it a shot. Research is great, but it doesn't make you the money. The money comes from getting that site up and running, then driving traffic to it.

    What i do is get the top 10 websites that are ranking for that keyword. Go to each site and check their pr and then divide it by 10. If the pr average for the 1st page is greater than 3.0, than competition could be hard. If lower, go for it.

        Thanks everybody

        What do you mean by 'reverse engineer their backlinks'?

        @Craig McPherson
        I will keep looking for another product then.

        @Leslie B

        Thank you, I'll give a try.

    I agree with the choices of traffic travis or Market Samurai. Look into the top ten results and compare their optimisation factors. You will normally find keywords that are wide open as they are not optimised for the keywords they are ranking for.

    So if you produce a website that has better on page seo, then your off page seo shouldn't be as hard to have you ranking.

    You can also look into their backlinks and see if you can reverse engineer their backlinks.

      Using the criteria I use for keyword selection, I would not go for this.
      Best I could hope for is #8-10 with an aggressive campaign.

      Don't let this sway you though. If your selection method works for you and you think you could get top 3, then go for it.

      Cheers,

      Craig

    Hey Random101,

    Deffo go with Traffic Travis, gives you backlink numbers, PR, age etc. for any keyword you need.

    To reverse engineer backlinks, I use SEO Spyglass (free version) and put the domain name of your competition website and it will show you the backlinks going to that page (up to 1100 on the free version, need to get the paid version if you want to look at more). Then you can see where they get their backlinks from and try to get the same links, then get more yourself to try to rank above.

    Well this is the basics of what you can do, there is a lot more but this is a start!!

    I use Market Samurai and find it very reliable. The free version works great! Also I find this recommended by many experienced marketers.

    I also agree that Amazon campaigns are great as keywords including product name tends to be far less competitive.
