I keep seeing this, can you explain how it's done?

I've been using the search function on these forums so I can educate myself and one thing that I keep seeing people talk about are "forum backlinks".

What's the practical "known good" way of producing good forum backlinks?

Clickable signature-file links with appropriate keyword anchor-text, in regularly updated, regularly indexed forums relevant to your niche.

    (Not "forum profile backlinks").

You put the URL of your website in your signature when you post on a forum. When you make a new post on a forum you get a backlink with it.

The parent to that idea is forum marketing. The short answer is, become a member of an active forum, post intelligent and useful comments and the links in your sig file are backlinks to other sites.

Take a look at my signature file below. I have links to several offers on other domains. Those are what are known as backlinks because they link back to my sites. One of the things search engines consider when placing you in search results is how many backlinks your site has. So to answer your question, the way to do it is to provide valuable info and each time you do you get another backlink(s).

I'm not going to go into the details of the benefits or lack of benefits of profile links and all the rest. The basics are what I've just written though.

Forgive me if you already know some of this... I'm sure it will be useful to someone. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses, very helpful. When you change your signature doesn't every post you ever created before get updated with the new signature thus removing your old backlinks and replacing them with the new? Or does it stay the same?

      Typically, yes.

It may vary a little between different types of forum software and/or the settings the administrators have selected, but what you describe above would certainly be the norm.
