    Ben,

    Have you got cpanel hosting?

In alot of cases you will have wordpress installation interlinked within your cpanel. That is of course if you have hosting which has a cpanel.

Look for the fantastico delux :-) and install it from there. It is a relatively easy process from there if you follow the wizard.

You could also visit youtube as there are many tutorials there that will help you with either fantastico or direct installations.

  • wordpress.org (NOT .com!) > download

That will get you the system files, but there are a lot of steps after that in order to install it. I would recommend watching a YouTube video.

The installation itself is not too difficult, but the amount of knowledge you need to be familiar with before you install is quite a bit. It is easier overall to install with Fantastico.

I have heard about some security concerns by doing it that way, but I personally have never had an issue and I have used Fantastico to install blogs probably upwards of 450 times.

    hello,
what type of web hosting are you using? If you are using one of the popular ones, they should have a panel that you can use to install wordpress into the domain of your choosing

Personally, I would do it manually. You'll learn how it all works, which will be useful when you need to make modifications and what not.

      1. Get a FTP client (FileZilla is free)
      3. Download Wordpress
      4. Follow the well-written WordPress intallation guide: codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
      5. Use this guide to modify the wp-config: codex.wordpress.org/Editing_wp-config.php

Follow this video guide for further understanding: youtube.com/watch?v=Wgu-Z4psiBA

It might be difficult in the beginning, but you'll learn a lot!

      Good luck.

Also, don't forget to ask your host about maybe installing this for you. Many hosts will do it for free, you just have to ask.

    At home?

    Installing WordPress « WordPress Codex

Or just set up an account on wordpress.com

Either way, the quickest route to success is to do a little of that infamous 'RTFM' thingie!

Usually, that's the worst possible advice in a marketing forum... since, according to the wp.com TOS, the commercial use of their blogs are forbidden!

        Correct - wordpress.com is strictly non-commercial.

The OP was asking about using WP to learn to build websites.

The best solution is to install this on your home computer, but you'll also have to install apache, php, mysql, etc. That's a LOT of extra work and additional learning curve that may or may not be useful in future.

On a hosted account, if you are using WP for public access, you'll need a second installation, preferably restricted access and in a subdomain; obviously, if you're NOT using WP already, you only need to install it once - again, with restricted access and in a subdomain. (Subdomain over a subdirectory because of backups and setting off claxons that this is something apart from the rest of the website; and you're less likely to make a mental mistake when you log in to work on either account.)

For local experiments - install XAMPP from apachefriends.org
One-click install of all the components you need...

I have 1and1 hosting and used this guide to install wordpress:
    <a href="http://www.khanaleem.com/2009/12/how-to-install-wordpress-on-1and1-web-host.html">1and1</a>

As Kev5 said - best to do it manually. You'll learn a ton.
