Ok..... here's the scenario...

Someone has stolen and used my content.

This, I can deal with and have plenty of experience in copyright infringement, DMCA and getting stolen content removed, etc.

I've complained to the necessary sources and several pages have already been taken down, accounts suspended with article directories, Web 2.0s and pages de-indexed by Google, etc.

I'm currently waiting for more pages to be actioned by the big G and 'friends'.

But, tonight I found out that this person/company is offering their SEO services here, on the Warrior Forum!

AND, immediately, I can see that this person/company has at least 2 accounts, which they are using to promote their services as 'satisfied customers' - one comments straight after the other in at least one thread!

I have been told by this person that my content hasn't been copied (which clearly it has, or no action would have been taken by anyone). Although dreadfully spun, to within an inch of its life in some cases, the content they are using is 100% mine. And, I know that they are also using other people's content in the same way.
This person/company told me in a very arrogant email that, basically, it was there for taking and they have a 'right' to use it.

I will take my annoyance/inconvenience/frustration at having my content stolen and copied out of the equation. But, what would you do?

1. Do nothing, which doesn't sit right with me because that leaves other people potentially paying $xx each month for SEO services which are more likely to harm their websites than help them?
2. Would you name and shame?
3. Would you do nothing for the moment until all traces of your own copied content have been removed because, despite it being pointed out to this person what they are doing, they are carrying on regardless -and with even more of a heads up they can remove/amend their copy so that Big G won't be any the wiser?
4. Just do nothing and try to accept it's part of life where IM is concerned and that the people who own/use these 2nd rate services will actually help us genuine IMers by causing problems for themselves?

PS this isn't a hypothetical question, it's a real situation for me at the minute and I would appreciate some advice/feedback.

    2. Would you name and shame?

Name and shame where? Here? If you do that, then you risk getting banned. It is against the board rules to "name and shame" here.

There are a lot of thieves online. They think that it is OK to spin an article without permission, but it's not. Your copyright protects you from unauthorized derivitives, as well as the original. The problem is that the burden of proof lies on you if you were to file suit.

If I were you, I would worry about protecting your own works first. Do whatever you can to make sure that these thieves stop stealing from you, but don't risk your own well being by trying to out them on a public forum. That could turn the tables and become a legal mess for yourself.

    Just my two cents.

Thanks for your two cents worth, it does help.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't name and shame publicly - that's not really my style. But I would attempt to do it in private to mods if the forum rules allow it and it meant other people's websites weren't going to be promoted using content which breaches copyright infringement.

As a newbie to the forum, it's tough knowing what's allowed and what isn't, but I wouldn't jump feet first into something that i thought could possibly be risky. But, at the same time, it wouldn't feel right letting someone with no IM experience get drawn into paying this company $100s each month for backlinks they're expecting to help their website when I'm just going to get them removed.

I would possibly just wait and see what happens at the moment. Although I would try to get my content back, I do believe that by people doing this, they are discrediting themselves and it will come out. We just don't know how long.

If you're sure they're offering services here and acting as their own shills, then turn in a ticket. That's fraud and admin would be interested in hearing about it.

I did as you suggested and submitted one last night. Thanks a lot.

You better wait and see what will happen. Name and shame doesn't help at all. You will just be banned by naming those person/company.

Well, it looks like this person's second account that they were using to promote their own services has been banned.

Think it's a shame that they can still offer WSOs though, because most people will buy without realising they've used fake rave reviews in the past.

That is a big disappointment to see people like that on this great forum.

My advice would be to just see what you get out of the authorities at first and ensure that this person or company does not steal any more of your work.

Try to get on with your business as much as possible without sucking too much time campaigning against him (even though he deserves everything you can throw at him).

He has already hurt your business, don't let yourself hurt it more by dwelling on things that won't help you move forward.

    Just my 2 cents though.

    Best of luck with it.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Yayy! I put a DMCA complaint in 10 days ago and just got an email from the big G, saying another 31 of this guy's pages have now been removed from Google.

This company seems to be doing well making money by providing backlinks for clients, using copied content (from my site and others). He's active here on WF and very active on a couple of other forums too.

As much as I can sympathise with his clients who are about to see the backlinks which they've paid for disappearing, I hope he'll now learn to leave my content alone.

He's got a pretty big thing going on, using hubs for links, as well as other strategies, all containing content copied from other websites, including ezine, as well as my own. These hub sites are among the content that's being removed.

Obviously, I can only complain to Google about my own copyright infringement but I do hope his activities will come under their spotlight for a while!
